Business casual??

Hi! I just landed a new job as an Administrative Assistant. My first day is Monday and they said attire should be business casual. Can someone tell me what that is exactly? Are small heels acceptable??

Re: Business casual??

  • Nice pants and tops.  Button downs, sweater sets, low heals.  All of those are what comes to my mind.

  • I would say business casual for women includes: Reasonable length skirts or full length pants paired with button down dress shirts, or sweater set (think Ann taylor loft). Small heels would work well with these combo's and keep you feeling comfortable on first day when you get a better feel for how others dress in your workplace.
  • Ditto to pps. Def. no jeans or gym shoes, no flip flops, tank tops.
  • Business casual is anything other than jeans where I work--khakis, pants, casual skirts, etc. Heels are fine.

  • Before you buy a whole bunch of new shoes, you might check as to whether or not you are required to wear closed toed shoes. As an administrative assistant, it's probably not a requirement. But some places require all office staff to stick to closed toed shoes for liability reasons. Some offices also require that you have at least capped sleeves (i.e. no sleeveless tops). So I'd get an eye for whether or not others are going sleeveless before spending a lot of money on sleeveless attire (unless you're buying a blazer or sweater to wear over it).

In a similar vein, I know of people who work in offices where the "business casual" dress code permits women to wear capri pants. This is not true in my office. Also, in my office, we are required to wear closed toed shoes.

  • We used to wear cotton pants and shirts while studying business diploma at the st patricks college as it was their dress code which is now a trend in business organizations as well.
  • I would agree with previous posters. Nice top and slacks. I would maybe find outfit options for your first few days until you get a feel for what others are wearing. I also am not able to wear open toed shoes in HR.
