My mom and my aunt are nuts about our family secret santa. Last year they went out for coffee and just assigned people their secret santa.
Last weekend a few of us were out to dinner and my aunt said we should pick secret santa for this year. We wrote down everyone's name and put them into a sugar packet holder to pick from.
When we went to start picking and realized not everyone was there to make their pick, my mom & aunt made my cousin pull a name out of the holder, hand it over to them, they would look at it together, whisper, think, whisper again, write something down, and say "next!". They assigned the secret santas in front of us! My cousins and I were like "wait a second!!!" they would not listen. just kept picking whoever they wanted and writing down on their "master list".
Crazies! We were all rolling with laughter.
Re: another s/o: secret santa story
My family is super secretive about our Secret Santas. Everyone picks their own person, or if someone is missing then a family member has to pick for them, not look at it, and give it to them when they see them.
We even learned that we could quickly figure out who's someone's SS was based on the wrapping paper they used (yeah, we're weird), so now the rule is you have to wrap the gift in newspaper. Oh, and my sister often pre-prints our names on labels that we're supposed to use so that you also can't tell who your SS is based on their handwriting. Man, we're such dorks!
That's funny!
My stepmom's family does secret santa and we usually just draw names on Thanksgiving and no one keeps it a secret because we're all asking other people for gift ideas for our person, haha..
