***Lisa in Oz***

Hey Lisa,

Have you heard of the neti pot?  One of my friends suggested it for my sinus infection and I must say, it works wonders.  It's kinda weird - you pour a saline solution into one nostril and it fills up your sinuses and pours out the other nostril.  But it really helps to clear out the junk in there and take away sinus pressure, if that's what you're experiencing from your allergies.  Hope you feel better!  (And btw, my doc said sudafed is okay.  But I'm not sure which kind is okay since there are so many types now, so I stuck to tylenol and the neti pot.)

Re: ***Lisa in Oz***

  • Yes!  I totally recommend this!  I use the one made by SinuCleanse but you can find them in any natural food shop or even regular drug/pharmacy stores.

I have seasonal Fall allergies and this is what I have been using once or twice a day to keep my nose clear.  I was desperate last week and took some Robitussin DM (on my doc's safe list), but I also prefer to avoid taking anything while I am PG, if I can avoid it.

  • I have heard of it, and the people that use them seem to like them a lot! I'm using a saline nasal spray, which I'm assuming does pretty much the same thing? My allergies here usually last from Oct-Feb (horrible, I know), so I may give the neti pot a shot when my current spray runs out since it will be cheaper than buying bottle after bottle of spray.

My doc also OK'd paracetamol, so I'm taking that to combat the headaches that I get at the same time - it doesn't really drive away the allergies, but it relieves a few of the symptoms at least.

  • Actually, the saline spray didn't really do much for me.  I guess it helped with the dryness but the rinse really helps to clear out all the junk in there.  Seriously, try it.  It's amazing.

  • Really? When I use the spray, I can feel it clear out the gunk and the spray trickles down the back of my throat (sorry if that's gross Stick out tongue).

I'm going shopping for some clothes over the weekend - there's a natural food shop in the same shopping center, so I'll check there!

  • Hahaha.  Well, with the neti pot you fill your sinus cavity and then blow your nose so all the gunk comes out.  I guess the saline loosens the mucus.  Talk about gross!  Stick out tongue  I had no idea there would be so much in there.  Haha.  But it feels so good afterwards!

  • Oh you blow your nose? For some reason I thought you just tilted your head and let all the water run out the other side. I don't know why I thought that. Actually, I do - it was a scene in Six Feet Under, where George explains it to someone else...I guess they didn't want to really go into the nitty gritty of how it works on the show lol.
  • **jumping in late and uninvited**

Not sure what the original post about your sinuses was, so I'm making an assumption that you're having nose problems.

One side effect of pregnancy for me was nasal congestion, weird I know.  I thought I had a cold, nope, tried the neti pot, didn't work, breathe right strips, negitive and thought it would pass, again, fail.

My dr. told me the congestion was simply because I was pg.  Similar to how your joints swell from increased blood flow and water retention, so do your capillaries in your nose, making your nostrils sorta smaller.  Oh, and on top of that, Denver is a high dessert so I had the pleasure of dealing with extremely dry air AND less of it! I couldn't breath right for my entire pregnancy.  And surprise surprise, it went away days after my little person was born.

One thing that I was able to get a minisule amount of releif from was sucking on a Halls drop combined with saline spray (Ayr, I think).  Of course you'll want to check w/ your dr.

So, if your nose probs are pg related, you might just have to deal for the long haul :(
