discounts on cars for teachers?

We are going to go car shopping today, and I know teachers get tons of discounts on different things.  Does anyone know if teachers can get a discount on a car?  Never hurts to ask!

Re: discounts on cars for teachers?

  • I have no idea but you can ask the dealer.
  • I have never heard of anyone getting a teacher discount for a car, but when I was wedding planninng I told every vendor I was an inner-city teacher and I was able to wrangle up some pretty good deals just because people know you aren't bringing in a ton of money...

Would love to know if this works for you!

  • Lucky you if you get one!

Where I live the teachers are paid VERY well...... like double what the average income is in this area.  It annoys me that they get all the discounts when they are the ones who can afford things more than the rest of us!

  • I am not a teacher but I have never heard of that. I do not really see why teachers should get a discount.

  • The union in Ohio provides a discount with VW.  I'm not sure how much or how it works.  It shows up on our member discount page for the state union.

Ditto.  I feel the same way about most occupational discounts (teacher, police officer, firefighter, etc).  I'm paid well for what I do, so why do I get a discount?

    this.

  • I don't see why teachers get discounts on some things, but I will still ask for my teacher discount.. if it saves me a buck or two, I'm happy.

  • My mom is a teacher and not all teachers are paid well. It becomes especially tricky when you are a single parent raising 3 kids. I'm sure she's not the only teacher in this situation so teacher discounts are extremely helpful and that's why a teacher would need a discount.
  • I can see discounts for specific occupations being reasonable if the item being purchased relates to that occupation in some way. For example, a discount on a computer or art supplies for a teacher. I also don't think that just because a job doesn't pay very well, you should get a discount. I went to school for fashion design. Entry-level jobs in the fashion industry pay around $13/hr. in a HCOL area, but there definitely are not discounts available for anyone in that kind of career, even though people obviously need to wear clothes. I have changed my career path because of the low pay, but I wouldn't have expected a discount regardless.

To answer the original question: I've never heard of a teacher discount on a car. You could ask, and I suppose it wouldn't hurt, but I'd also prepare for a side-eye from the dealer.

While I'm not saying some sales people wouldn't side-eye this, the smart ones would use it as an opportunity ;).  If I were selling cars, I would slash the price a bit, foster goodwill, and potentially get a sale...whether the dealership had a program or not.  I wouldn't lie about there not being a program, but would still offer a discount based on my appreciation of the vital role teachers play.
