Another WR question

How often do you get your rings cleaned? Do you have a great at-home cleaning method? I haven't had mine done since the wedding, but I'm going after work. I'm self-conscious of how dirty they must be!

Re: Another WR question

  • I haven't had them professionally cleaned since the wedding.

I have some cleaner at home and do them myself, but they don't look NEARLY as nice as when the jeweler does it. He said he'd do them for free any time, but I just haven't made it in.

  • I had mine dipped before the wedding and cleaned so they look decently good still.

After getting my braces off I got this little sonic cleaner thing for my retainer. When the orthodontist gave it to me he joked that it worked wonders on jewelery, and it does!

  • I got a jewelery cleaner thing from Zales (for free when we were looking for wedding bands!). I put the ring in there for a little bit, then take it out and clean it with the brush, run it under water and it's done.

Before that, I used dish soap in water and cleaned it with a toothbrush. Both methods basically worked the same for me. And I don't see a difference from when I've had it done professionally.

I plan to have it professionally cleaned/have the setting checked once a year.

  • My grandmother is a jeweler and swears by this homemade solution. I use it about once a week to keep mine shining.

    1 cup warm water
    1 TBS ammonia
small squirt of Ivory dish detergent

Mix in a cup then put your rings in to sit for a few minutes (like 2-3). Use a soft bristle toothbrush to gently scrub away anything between the prongs etc and dry the rings well using something soft like a jewerly cloth. This works for diamonds and silver/gold/platinum bands but I would check before using it on anything else.

I use this stuff on my rings about once a month. I got it at walmart for under $5. I just drop my rings in for like 20 mins while I take a shower and then use the little brush and rinse it off with water and it works wonders. It's what my parents have always used on their jewelery so I definately trust it

  • I take mine in once every 6 months to get cleaned, dipped, checked, etc.  It is part of the warranty that we have.  I've been told that any jewelry store will clean your ring for free whether you purchased it there or not but I have never actually tested this.

  • I took mine into the jewelry store about a month after we got back from our HM because DH needed a new ring -- his ended up being too big somehow (it fit in January when we bought it and by June it was huge - he claims his fingers shrunk).  We bought titanium so no sizing but it was less than $100 so we bought him a new one that fit him after he almost lost it a couple of times.

I can take mine in whenever I want but I dont have to go in any certain time to keep the warranty or anything.  I use a cheap jewelry cleaner like pp's from walmart at home since I never take my rings off and am constantly getting flour and other food crap in them.  It works pretty well but I think it sparkles more and stays cleaner longer when I take them to the store.  Now that I'm thinking about it, I'll probably try to stop one night this week.

  • I got a soft bristle toothbrush attachment for my electric toothbrush and use that with a little dish soap.  It works great and makes everything nice and sparkly.  It also scrubs in places I don't think I'd be able to clean as well using just a regular toothbrush.  I'll probably get mine dipped once a year as an anniversary gift to myself.
  • I bought mine from Zale's and since there is a store in the mall, I have it cleaned every time I got to mall, about every 2 months. I clean it at home with a toothbrush and I think it cleans it just as well as at the store.

    This!

I bought mine from Zales and the lady told me that I could bring it in whenever I wanted to get it cleaned.  No receipts or anything!

  • I got mine dipped before the wedding too and they are still shiny! But I do only wear mine maybe for 4-5 hours a day and don't put lotion on my hands when I'm wearing them, which I've heard is the fastest way to dull the shine.
  • Thanks for the advice and comments. :)

angel - I'm so paranoid about lotion and my rings, because I used to dull and gunk up my sterling silver a lot.

So, I took my rings to the jeweler but I won't get them back until tomorrow. Finger feels so nakey.

I use this on my rings every other week or so, but I only leave them in for a couple of minutes and then use the little brush and rinse them off with water. It's sold at Bed Bath and Beyond too and it works great!

I could be totally wrong, but I think a jeweler should be able to clean your rings within minutes...I was with a friend at a jewelry store once and she had her ring cleaned in a few minutes.

  • CT, yeah, usually I stand there while they clean my rings in the back, but the lady said "they are fooling around with the polisher right now." Boo.

  • I have a warranty plan with my rings at Reed's at our mall.. and I have to have it cleaned and inspected every 6 months.  I usually get it cleaned whenever Im at the mall also.. I might have had it cleaned 2-3 times since the wedding.  They took off a lot of scratches when they did the inspection and cleaning I guess with a soft buffing wheel and it turned out great!!! Doesnt take long for it to happen again or get dirt between the sides because of my setting (see below).  The manager there also gave me a container that I could soak it and clean it on my own at home with a little brush similar to what they do at the store, I just havent used it yet.  DH has yet to get his cleaned, and he's a mechanic.. so I need to clean his or get it cleaned/polished at the store for him next time we go.E Ring
