House projects - share!

Hello ladies.  Anyone have any house projects they are working on?  Either renovations, ore redecorating, or just "spring cleaning."  Let's inspire each other.

DH and I are planning on adding a terrace to the house.  Currently, we have nothing; you walk out to the sky.  We love to be outside, especially in the pool, but it sucks not having a terrace.  We have the architect drawing up plans... can't wait to break ground, hopefully next month (or maybe Jan)!

We plan on having a built in bbq with a workstation, and bar... and of course the TV for game nights.  We are going to have a "living room" area, and a "dining room" area... and lots of fans for the Miami summer.  Oh, and let's not forget the pool heater for early springtime.  =)

Re: House projects - share!

  • Jackie, your terrace plans sound amazing!

We bought our house five months ago and have been painting, decorating, and buying furniture ever since. With the exception of a few minor things, we're starting to think about the master bedroom and bathroom. We need new bedding, and have a good idea of what we want, but the hard part is actually finding it. We also have a good idea of what paint colors we'll choose, but we want to have the bedding first, just to be sure. We'll replace the ceiling fan and perhaps add some cute wall sconces we found at Ikea. We need a headboard and new nightstands. I'd like to do a DIY headboard, so I'm searching for ideas.

  • Oh Jacky, I wish I had your yard!! WE are dying to purchase a home with a pool, especially with our Miami weather.

We have tons of projects going on. this month my goal is finish our bedroom. Paint walls, ceiling, trimming and closet doors, remove and install the tiles on the window ledge, sand and paint our night stands and change all the electrical outlets. And Hopefully if i can squeeze it in our budget install a new fan.

Oh and finish sewing our sheer drapery!

Do you have any pics? I would love to see your progress

  • Oh, that sounds like fun!  GL finding the bedding, that is always the hard part. FYI - I found one I loved at RL outlet, but they only had the duvet, but since it was an amazing price, we got it anyway.  Turns out I got all the matching accessories (shams, sheets) on eBay brand new for an amazing price.  So, if you like something, but it is out of your price range, try eBay!  =)

I believe I blogged about the before and after of my yard.  Not much was done except clean the pool which was filthy.  We also changed the doors leading to the yard, and converted a window to a door in my kitchen.  So, there may be pictures.  Trust me that I'll be documenting the before and after on this project when it begins.  For now, we are happy to have the architect working the plans... we requested them about 6 mo ago!

Okay - I found the post...

  • we're turning our garage into a playroom!!  we were goign to turn Sarah's nursery into a playroom before we found out we were pregnant.. it's a good thing we never made that hole in the wall... we found out we were pregnant the week before we were supposed to begin1

so we're converting our 1 car garage into a play room wtih chalkboard wainscotting, a cork board chair rail and lots of storage for toys!

  • Oh, I must share my great find for those remodeling bedrooms.  DH and I have been searching for the perfect nightstand lamps for the longest time (3 yrs), and finally ordered them at Pottery Barn.  We installed them about a month ago, and they look so pretty!  I have to take a pic to share... but for now, here they are.

I think they give a different look to the room, and frees up space in the nightstand.  Oh, and we added a remote control to the lamps, so no worries about having to get up to turn them off... just switch them off (switch is just like a reg. light switch on the wall size-wise, but portable, so we just keep it on top of the nightstand).

OMG I love the idea of the chalkboard walls... and the corkboard for posting their lovely artwork.  =)  Once we have kids, that is my plan for our garage.  We have a 2-car garage, so I want to just convert 1/2 of it, so the other have remains for storage.  And since it is right off the kitchen, it will be great being able to watch the kiddies.  =)

    GL w/ the project!

  • Another area for improvement in my house is the foyer.  We had been searching high and low for a foyer piece, and then out of no where, DH's cousin gifts us her foyer table, which is the same exact set as our living room tabes (which is adjacent to foyer)... perfect!

I quickly added my decor (flowers, decorative vase, and frames).  Now the missing part is the mirror, which I'll be searching for this wkend at TJMaxx/Marshalls.  And I would love these sconces for either side of the mirrors... such a lovely look!  But these are a bit steep, so hoping TJMaxx has them too.  =)

This is a great idea. We found our dream bedding at Crate&Barrel, but I was hoping to find something similar for less. I'll keep scoping out the C&B outlet at Sawgrass Mills. I hadn't thought about checking on eBay, though, so I'll have to do that.

  • Melissa and I are in the same boat.  We just purchased our home so there is a ton to do.  We just completed painting the entire hours.  I bought new deco. for the guest bath.  We purchased ane leather sectional for the family room and I painted the old tv stand to give it some life.  We also just purchased a new dining room table and now I am refurbishing the chandler that was in the dining room.  We purchased new office furniture and a flat screen.  I would really like to remodel the kitchen but that will probably be a project for next year.  So we still need new living room furniture and we want to buy new bedroom furniture and put our old furniture in the guest bedroom.  Truly my list can go on and on because there are so many things I want to do with our new home.

  • LOL. I didn't even get into the list of projects we plan to do over the next couple of years. Right now it's just save, save, save!
  •

***Jackie the lamps are a great idea for saving space, and they look nice. I am going to show DH these and see what he thinks.  Also as far as the sconces did you check Pier 1? They may have something comparable in style for cheaper.

Yeah, I think I saw some in Pier1 recently.  I want to buy the mirror first to see how much space I'll have for the sonces.  Thanks for the suggestion.  =)

  • Last night we signed the contract to get our patio done! We are so excited to finally be able to enjoy the outside. Once the patio is done, we are moving onto landscaping.
  • Aw all you ladies make me wish I owned a home! We are renting so we can only do so much.

    My next projects are:

    - Make a HUGE fabric covered cork board for above my desk.  We need something on the wall and it will add a lot of decor and a little color.

Here is the cork board inspiration:

    image

Here is the inspiration for the look of the desk, but with the cork board behind it.  I already have the black desk and the lamp.  I am going to get some blossoms to put in a glass vase too:

    image

    - Find something huge and decorative to put above the enormous couch we have.  I am really liking this idea to hold pictures actually, and am researching cheaper ways to make it.  My DH may even do it for me!:

    image

     - Finally, we have to hem our enormous curtains that are form Ikea.  My mom is helping me with that one :)

  • I am with Michi, all of you girls are making me wish I had a house too!  We are currently renting in ML and looking for a home!  I sure hope we find one soon =)

Michi I lovce the cork board idea to put above your desk!  Good luck!

  • I know I'm late but I wanted to share.

We are taking down all the walls in the house and replacing with drywall. They are a thick paneling right now. (ugly). They paint all the walls. I have most of the paint colors picked out.

I going to sand and repaint our tv stand, dinning room table, and all the cabnets in the kitchen. We need to replace all the outlets, and rescreen the back patio. We are going to put a white metal kick plate on the bottom to stop the dogs from going through the screen. I also need to replace the fan out there. I'm also going to take the ceiling fan down in the living-room.

We need to replace some windows from the previous owners dog going threw them and then they just put plexiglas (sp) in as a replacement. Also need to get all new screens for all the windows.

Jackie: I love those lamps great find. GL on your patio.

    So many great ideas girls.

  • Chacha - we live south, near Dadeland Mall.  The lot is 15K sq feet... we really lucked out on the house.  If you read the blog further, I wrote about the whole ordeal!  =)  Thanks for the compliments.

    Michi

  • Thanks Melissa and Jackie!

I am channeling my void for wedding planning to decor planning lol.  I look at Pottery Barn a lot for inspiration and then try to think of ways to DIY or copy it.  My DH and I are going to go to Home Depot this weekend to see if we can DIY that piece that holds the frames above the couch, I just love it!

The cork board is going to be an easy project, I just need to get on it! :)

I actually changed my bio to a "Nestie Bio" and I am going to add pictures of our place with the progress.  I think the bio will keep my motivated to get my butt in gear and decorate! :)

  • We bought our house about a year ago. Our first project (finally done after 3 weeks) was to remodel our bathroom. It had a ton of broken/cracked floor tiles and we decided a couple of months ago to just re-do the whole bath.

Our next project is to paint our "extra room" soon to be baby's room. Another project that we have it to replace the vanity in our downstairs (1/2 bath) bathroom because it just looks old! Also, the fan in that bathroom is drying me off the wall, too dam loud, so I want to replace that.

After that, put Mexican tiles in our entrance (we have concrete)... and I think that's it for now....
