We just got home from a family Thanksgiving thing on my dad's side and on the way home we stopped by the hospital to see my maternal grandma. She is in her late 80s and she blacked out and fell on Wednesday and when my uncle took her to the hospital they found out she had double pneumonia. Which she's had several times before. But then on Friday they found out that she had injured her brain when she fell and further to that she fell two days earlier and now has quite a bit of blood on her brain. On Friday it looked like she wouldn't last the night but then she stabilized somewhat. But today she was very confused and she was very weak. Up until this incident she's been pretty with it mentally. I was asking her questions just to make conversation but she would either try to say something but it wouldn't come out or or she would just say she didn't know. But when I said good bye and that I loved her she said she loved me too but I'm not sure she knew who I was.
But she's at peace and she's ready to die. She's seen each of her 11 children now since Friday.
Whenever she does go she will leave quite a legacy. She has 11 children of whom 10 are married, she has 80 some grandchildren (including our spouses) and great-grandchildren. She was married for over 50 years and out of 25+ marriages in our family there is not a single divorce. There are no major issues in the entire family and quite often almost all of her kids are around the same table Sunday for supper although some live 2 hours away.
I know it's really hard on my mom to see her mom like this and she wishes that if it's time for her to go that she would go peacefully.
Re: Saw Grandma for maybe the last time
I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother, but it sounds like she has raised a terrific family - I'm sure it will help her to know that they will have eachother to lean on.?
Keeping you in my thoughts. (hugs)

Wow she sounds like an amazing woman. Sorry to hear she's hit such a rough health patch - maybe its just her time...
I'll be thinking of you and your family the next little while - keep us posted on how she's doing.
I'm so sorry Krista. But what a beautiful legacy she leaves for your family. It sounds like she was a real role model. What a lucky woman to be the matriarch of such a large and successful family- really, that's all any of us can hope for.
Best wishes for you and your family
