I just made $400... and other updates

Telus (the BC/Alberta phone company which I HATE) has been calling us a lot lately and asking us to go back to them, promising huge savings. I didn't agree to go back because (a) I hate them and (b) I had been promised "huge savings" by them before and found it was all a sham (when I was a customer of theirs they sold me a phone for dirt cheap, until we got the bill- it was several times more than they quoted me and they refused to take it back).

I'm with Shaw for all our services and I'm happy there but in the interest of saving money I sent them an email and told them that Telus was offering me quite the deal, implying that I would consider switching.

So they just called and they told me basically that Telus was lying and there's a lot of fine print (which I don't doubt) but they continued by giving me one month free, one month for $20, and a discount for the next year. It all adds up to over $400. Not bad for 5 minutes worth of work!

In other news, the pediatrician's office called today. New doctor wants to see us. She has also ordered that the bloodwork be repeated. So we went this afternoon to re-do the bloodwork (which took forever... they kept missing veins. Poor little Ethan was stabbed over and over again for nothing). We're seeing new doctor on Thursday. Hopefully she's as good as the old one (who, I found out, did leave under some kind of emergency situation, althoug I don't know specifics. The receptionist said that he "left suddenly" and "didn't plan on going home" and "really really wants to come back here soon because he really likes it here, and we like him" so hopefully he does come back soon). I was Googling South Africa and the violence there and it's shocking- apparently women have a better chance of being raped than learning how to read, and 25% of teenage boys think gang rape is a fun weekend activity. I was horrified.

We have no appointment yet at Children's, we're still on the wait list.

  • holy crap about the south africa stats, I hope your doc gets back here soon and that whatever situation he had to rush back for isn't too serious.

Too bad about all the blood work having to be re-done. I hate bloodwork - I can't even imagine having to watch a little one suffer through it. Hopefully you get your appointment soon!

On a happier  note, woo hoo for $400 savings!

  • Boo to repeated blood work. Thanks for updating, I was thinking about you. And yeeeahhh South Africa is pretty nuts. I remember booking stuff for a medical meeting I worked on to coincide with a huge Diabetes conference and it was a bit touchy. The hotel was great (I didn't go, but I booked all the stuff for it) and super nice, but just heard really awful things.
  • yeah, the repeat bloodwork sucks but it didn't surprise me. The other doctor had warned me that we might repeat everything, as his alkaline phosphatase levels were so ridiculously high and everything else was normal. He said that some of the things they were testing for had high rates of false negatives and he thought it was likely that we would end up doing everything again to make sure we didn't get a false negative somewhere. I guess New Doctor agrees with that.

I guess we'll also get the results of the brain ultrasound on Thursday. I totally forgot about that until just now... it makes me wonder if they found something worth telling me about. They wanted to make the appointment for tomorrow (which is pretty quick, right?) but I suggested Thursday instead because I thought that would give the blood test results time to come in... but maybe the purpose of the visit is more about the ultrasound. I can't believe I forgot about that.

  • best of luck with the new doc, sounds like they are doing the right things so hopefully that means s/he is as good (or better) than the last one!!

    and woohoo for $$!
