Tummy time questions

When I am supposed to start tummy time?  Is it too soon or should I have started already?  And what exactly do I do?  Just lay her down on her stomach on a blanket?  She seems to small for this.

Any tips?

Re: Tummy time questions

  • Yep, that's part of it. If you don't like putting her on her tummy on a blanket, tummy time includes tummy-to-tummy time- as in, you're lying on your back and your daughter is lying on your chest. This is a great opportunity for face-to-face contact and counts as tummy time.

I don't think it's too early at all. We started my son with tummy time pretty much from day 1 (on our chests) and he was rolling over by 4 weeks. So I think it helped him to develop strength.

  • When she was that small, DD hated tummy time. We just had her spend a ton of time lying on one of our tummies.  She liked that, and it was very nice snuggle time.
  • We started tummy time as soon as the nub from her cord came off. Sometimes I put her on the floor and sometimes I put her on my chest. Because she was in the hospital for 2 weeks, she got tummy time there. She is already steadying her head and trying to push off. I'm trying to put her on the floor more now.

  • I've started it, but not very regularly. It's something that I want to get better at doing more often. I asked my doc and she said it's never to early to start!
