H1N1 Vaccine

Has anyone gotten it?

A dr office has offered to come give the shot to everyone at my firm.  I think I'm going to do it since my nephew has come down with H1N1.  I haven't been around him lately but I figure better safe than sorry at this point.

Re: H1N1 Vaccine

  • No, not doing it.

I feel like the vaccine came out a little two quickly.  I know the flu shot is new every year but there isn't as much pressure for it. Does that make sense?

It does.  I felt the same way at first but my MIL is a nurse and she and I talked about it for over an hour on Saturday and she calmed my worries about it.

  • It's still not available anywhere in MN. My doctor thinks it will be in mid-november and wants me to get it very badly. I also felt the same way as you Mel, and was unsure of producing a vaccine so quickly but after speaking with my dr i would like to get it if it ever becomes available.
  • I want to get it, if I can.  They are giving them out at the end of the month in my county for free.

Agreed entirely.  Also, I never get the regular flu shot, am in pretty good health, keep pretty good hygiene (I wash my hands thoroughly and regularly and avoid touching public property.  When I do, I now make more of an effort to wash my hands again or use hand sanitizer.)

I also don't see a real need for me.  I have no kids, MH and dog can fend for themselves if I were to get REALLY sick, and I have ample sick time.  From what I've seen/heard, it doesn't tend to hit adults as hard as kids. And I'm not in a high risk category.

Like Stacy said, they aren't offering it here for some time.  A few local schools were supposed to offer it this week and next to their students, but that has been cancelled because WI can't get enough to even cover the healthcare workers they're forcing to have it, let alone the high risk categories (children, diabetics, etc.)  So by the time it gets here, it'll be December.

I agree with Mel especially after talking to my mom and SIL who are nurses. Neither of them suggest it because of all the accelerants (sp?) put into it and the speed in which thet got it out. Plus people that got the swine flu shot in the 70's have just recently been reporting health issues and they believe it's from the shot.

  • I am not getting it.  Even though VA seems to be a high risk state I have a strong immune system and have never even had the regular flu in my life.  When I was pregnant I was a little more on the fence about it.  I just don't like how quickly it came out and they were supposed to do all this testing that finished up in September but has anyone seen the results of this testing?

No i still havent seen it and thats one of the major problems I have with it. I also spoke with my nurse yesterday about how the media is exploding this and creating such a chaos especially where i was at yesterday. I spoke with some nurses in my family who are for it and just told me to be aware that they do make one without thermasol in it so thats what im hoping to get if it ever becomes available.

  • I think the media is blowing this way out of proportion.  Yes the flu is bad and apparently the swine flu is a little more dangerous but the regular flu can kill just as many people.  Instead of talking about all the deaths from swine flu why don't they talk about all those that have survived?

  • I got mine.  It was the one without the additives.  I haven't had the flu in years but all of my docs stressed it since pregnant women have a decreased immune system.
  • I got mine this week at Cate's ped's office, the risks of me not getting it far out way those of me getting it.  Cate will also be getting hers Next Friday, I've done a lot of research, it helps that I worked in the bio-tech industry for years.
