Just curious...

(and also I need a mild distraction from writing - as always)

Yesterday's vaccine discussion got people pretty involved. I largely stayed out of it for a lot of reasons. One of them was that I often find internet debates of that kind somewhat pointless because my perception is that people continue to voice their own opinion but are rarely influenced by anyone else's opinion (this is true IRL as well, but I feel like it's heightened on the internet). (There are other reasons I think it's pointless, but that's tangential to the current discussion. Can you tell I've been thesisizing?)

So, without getting into the debate again, I'm just curious if anyone's opinion was in any way altered by yesterday's discussion?

Re: Just curious...

  • Yesterday's discussion? No.

That said, I have read debates on Knot/Nest/Bump forums before that have brought up points that I didn't previously consider or know about thus changing my opinion on the issue. So I wouldn't say that internet discussions are less likely to influence opinion. I much prefer them since you have the opportunity to link articles and information which back up your claims during the discussion. You don't have the entire world wide web at your fingertips when having a similar debate say, over dinner with your in laws.

  • You make good points. There are times when it would be nice to just hand someone some background information during dinner. So maybe I was just bothered by yesterday's discussion and not by internet discussions in general since yesterday's discussion touched on some things that I'm fairly passionate about. (AND you changed my opinion on it!)

Although, I was happy that yesterday's debate didn't deteriorate into a stupid war ending in someone GBCNing. The Full House theme music was a better way to go.

  • I'm on KB's couch. If it's an issue I don't feel very strongly about (the vaccine issue is an example), I stay out if it, take in both sides, and look at the facts of the issue. However, if it's another issue in which I'm firmly decided, I will take into account the opposing viewpoint, but usually I won't change my view.

  • I hold my opinions because I believe they're right.  If I thought they were wrong, I would change my opinion.  For this reason, I like to hear the opinions of people who totally disagree with me, to see why they feel that way and to get their explanation.  In some cases, I like to think hearing the opposite side would get me to change (or at least clarify) my opinion.

When it comes to vaccines, though, I feel like I know a lot and have a lot to offer.  There's a lot of misinformation out there, so I always try to chime in and share what I know in the hopes that it will save someone some pain or trouble.

  • Yesterday's discussion was great! I didn't get mad about anything, I hope no one thinks I did. It was just good old-fashioned discussion, which I love. Sometimes my view can be swayed, but not usually. I think the difference in this instance though was the fact that we were talking hypothetical children for some vs. my own real children. It's just impossible to say how you will feel or what you will do when it's your real, living children's health involved. I don't really feel like it was even much of a debate, because those who don't believe in vaccines or limited vaccines stayed out of it. I would have liked to have heard what those arguments were.?
  • I think debates are pretty pointless as well, even though I like to join in if I have something to say. But I like to comment on people's debating tactics - I do this to my husband (ie, YOU CALLING THEM NAMES = THEM NOT TAKING YOU SERIOUSLY ANYMORE {he gets pretty mean}). IE, it annoys me when people use studies funded by a company/individual with an agenda.

This happened in aprevious post about tanning -s omeone posted "guidelines" that said something along the lines of "Tanning is safe everybody! Don't worry!". The guidelines were from the American Society of Tanning Beds or something like that.
