Our dog stays home by herself all day while we are at work and I'm worried that she gets bored. I've been thinking of getting her a Kong. Does anyone have one of these?
Any other ideas/suggestions on how to keep her entertained? She's an older dog so she's really not into toys and such. She has like one toy that she likes but she only likes it if you are playing with her. She doesn't play with it by herself.
Re: Doggy question
We had a kong for Gypsie and she lost it within days, we found it when we moved though and now it's lost again.
When I used to work though (this might sound stupid) I'd leave the TV on for her. She would watch E!
Just make sure you get her one that is bigger then her normal size. I read this blog and youtube video on this poor doggie that was playing with his and his tongue got stuck. They had to amputate 1/2 of his tongue because it had lost it's blood flow. The youtube video was the owner trying to teach the poor thing how to drink again
I think the guy had the size fit for the size of dog but I guess it can get wedged in there. However if you got a bigger size I think it would be fine.
cole--that is so sad! I will definitely keep that in mind. Poor doggy. =(
christen--it's not dumb! I used to leave the TV on either food network or animal planet for her (now that's silly) but then I started wondering if it was just costing me more electricity because I can't fathom she sits there and watches the tv all day.
When the Kong is not lost, does she like it and play with it often?
Do you think I should take her to the pet store and see if she can "pick" a toy she likes? Or just stick to the puppy kong?
You could hire a dog sitetr to go play with her during the day....whats a kong?
Totally not in our budget. We can barely afford someone to watch our kid. As a matter of fact, I told my husband the other day that if kids were as self sufficent as dogs, I'd have a lot more of them.
A Kong is a toy that you put a treat into and they dog has to work to get it out. It looks like this:
Oh okay, i know what it is now
I can let the bugger out in the afternoon when I'm passing on my way home if you want?? A little interim human contact between you guys in the mornings and evenings??
Our dog trainer suggested getting the kong, filling it with peanut butter, and freezing it. We haven't tried this yet, but supposedly freezing it keeps the PB inside and the dog will spend all day trying to get it out.
I have coupons good for this weekend only for PetSmart. Let me know.

So sweet of you to offer! I try to go home for lunch when I can. If I ever do need that though, I'll definitely let you know.
Jenn, do you know my dog is the only dog in the world that does not like peanut butter? She prefers cheese.
