drawing the line: speaking your mind vs safety

I was having a discussion with a few friends the other day... and someone mentioned that if they see someone litter from their car, they will  beep at them.  Another friend was horrified, said she minds her own business! lol  This got into a discussion of what is our business (the planet/environment) or not, and how other people could potentially react to it (pull out a handgun from the glove compartment or something).

Do you ever think about things like that?  I definitely feel that way sometimes but am fearful of someone having a crazy reaction, and then I feel guilty for not doing the right thing.

Re: drawing the line: speaking your mind vs safety

  • I once chewed out a woman who left her grocery cart directly in front of my car because she was too lazy to put it away (we were ~20 steps from the cart-return area).  So I guess I speak my mind when it suits me?

But, this was an altercation between two grown women in suburban Ohio.  I probably wouldn't have done that if it was in front of my first apartment's scary bad-neighborhood grocery store.  Or maybe I would've... they had a cop stationed out front 24/7.

If I were honestly concerned about my safety, I'd keep it to myself.  I speak out when irritation outweighs fear of injury!

  • i am of the speak my mind school of thought but a lot of that comes from living in southern california and at the beach-we have such a problem with fires here and it makes me NUTS when i see people throw cigarettes out of their car windows,.  Also because I live so close to the beach we are not allowed permit parking so we get a load of tourists and people from further east coming to our neck of the woods littering being disrespectful etc....it makes me crazy- i dont do that when i drive into bev hills or the city so it would be nice if others respected my neighborhood as well---okay off my soap box now.
  • I wish I had more guts to speak my mind but I don't.  Stick out tongue  The best I can do is give them stink eye.  The other day I was walking home from the store when the lady in front of me took off the cover of her soft drink cup and just threw it on the ground.  I really wanted to say something to her but she was MUCH bigger than me and looked really scary.  I didn't feel like being beat to a bloody pulp that day so I shut my mouth.  Gah, I'm such a wuss!

    This is me, too.

This reminds me of a few years back, when a girl got shot (and died) at a night club in Vancouver for trying to stop a group of guys from beating up another guy.  I remember there were a lot of arguments between those who called the girl's actions "stupid" and those who thought she did the right thing.  It is really hard to draw the line.

I have to admit that this is pretty much me, too. Ben will sometimes speak up, but in a fairly passive aggressive way - like if we see a smoker dropping their cigarette butts all over the place, he'll turn to me and say really loudly, "God I hate it when smokers litter. It's SO disgusting." On the one hand I guess it's better than chicken me who doesn't say anything, and on the other hand I'm nervous that one of these days we'll get beaten up lol. Stick out tongue

  • Yeah, 9 times outta 10 I speak up. However, if the situation looks like it could get dangerous and I have Maya with me, I'd refrain.
