Dear Coworkers:

If you have a cold, flu or the plague, please STAY HOME. Really. No one thinks you're a hero for coming into work when you're sick - you just make the rest of us worry that we'll catch something. Please take your coughing, sneezing, watery eyed, germy selves home. I know you have plenty of sick days available, because in the 1.5 years I've been here, I've never seen either of you take a sick day.

Re: Dear Coworkers:

  • It makes me wonder why people do this. Do they feel guilty about missing work? Is there no one else that can pick up the slack if they're not there? Are there too many hoops to jump through in order to take a sick day? I used to see so many of my co-workers in Japan coming into work sick because they just felt like it was too hard to take a day or two off. I would really hate to think that they do just because they're rude and inconsiderate. Do you think they even realize that they could be spreading their yuck to everyone else?

You know, I really don't know. Maybe they feel guilty, but there are enough people in the teams that they can easily take a day (or two, or three) off without work not getting done. And taking a sick day is so easy - we can have up to three in a row without any questions asked , and all you have to do is tell your supervisor that you're not coming in - that's it. When you come back to work, you just fill out an online form (it literally takes 20 seconds) to say you had those days off and to mark them as sick days for payroll and HR.

I'm guessing it's just their personal work ethic, since some people take pride in never taking a day off sick?

  • under normal circumstances, I am usually the kind of person that goes to work unless I feel like death.  although I have the sick days, I'd rather save them up for vacation :)  but given everything going on right now, most work places are discouraging anyone from going into work sick b/c you never know if it's the flu until you've already passed your germs on to everyone else... and I agree w/this and would choose to stay home this year if I were sick.

so in a way I can understand where they are coming from but I also understand where you are coming from! when I am sick and at work though I try to keep a good distance from everyone and I am literally washing my hands every 5 minutes anyway (sick or not)

  • Maybe they're saving up their sick days for a rainy day?  Seriously, who knows.  No one's pregnant in my office (that I know of) but I still stayed home when I had a cold b/c I was worried it might be something more that wasn't showing its worst yet.  Something contagious was going around our office but that didn't stop some people from coming in.
  • I don't get it either.  But I can think of a few reasons (right or wrong) for people coming to work when still sick. Seems very common around here...

    (1) Money... even if you are lucky enough to get paid sick leave, some people are afraid to use it and would rather "save" it in case they ever become so out of it that they really can't function. Then there are those of us who don't get paid if we don't work, so we suffer through a lot because we need our paychecks!

    (2) Pride... though I have never personally had a problem with this one.

    (3) Fear... in this economy and sometimes in general, people are afraid to under-produce or look like slackers.  I know I used to feel bad calling in sick, even legitimately, because I worried that my boss wouldn't believe me or that I would inadvertently flake on some really important responsibility of mine.

    (4) Lack of Awareness... for the repercussions of their actions, for themselves in the future (like making their illness worse) or for others (like you and the LOs working hard to grow).  I know that I am definitely more aware of my actions and how they affect the health and well-being of others since becoming pregnant and becoming so hyper-aware of germs and toxins.  Unfortunately, I can't say that I used to be so thoughtful, but I do hope I remain so even after the baby is born.

Stay healthy mommy and little pirates!!

  • I know what you mean! I don't exactly have that problem, but I have to deal with sick kids at school and wish their parents would keep them home. I caught a cold 3 times in my last trimester. The doctor gave me a list of meds that I could take but I decided to tough it out. It was awful. Sending lots of stay-healthy vibes to you and your baby pirates!
  • Yeah I don't know why people feel the need to go to work to infect people...

If I were sick, I would definitely stay home.. though my company is pretty flexible about working from home so I wouldn't lose any vacation days.  Funny thing is I've actually been hoping I would get at least sniffles or something so I would have an excuse to stay home :p

  • I totally hear you, and I'm usually really good about staying home if I think I'm contagious.  But I will add another reason....at least for my job.  It is WAY harder for me to be gone than it is for me to come in.  As a teacher, I literally have to teach a stranger how to do my job through a series of notes.  And, since I teach music, I can't even be sure that the sub will know a single thing about music (they usually don't), so I somehow have to get them to teach music without knowing the first thing about it.  I can have them show a video or play a game, but this only works once or twice throughout the school year, so I have to be careful with my sub plans.

That said, I totally agree that eve if it's difficult, people need to stay home right now if at all possible ( and it certainly sounds like it is for your co-workers)!

  • I at least understand why people do that in my company - we just have one pool of paid time off - just called personal leave - that's vacation, sick time, everything.  So essentially you're trading a vacation day to stay home when you're sick.

That said ............NOW is DIFFERENT!!  For crying out loud, people, get better before you come into work!

  • I have done it before. Only because I had already missed lots of time for my child being sick. This was when I was a single mom and had no backup help.?I was the only provider in my house, so I would do it out of fear.?

?I was not afraid of loosing out on sick pay. I was afraid of constantly being passed up on $$ due to my attendance. Or just getting fired.?

I am still here 7 years later and I am still the only mommy.

    ?

  • I have to admit, I hadn't thought about a few of the reasons people might be coming in while sick! Although in this particular case, I think it's mostly out of pride of "I've never missed a day" (we work for a government organization, so plenty of sick days, no missing out on raises because of attendance, etc.), I think there were definitely some good points raised that I'll keep in mind in the future so I don't always immediately judge. me too!! Our work has this policy that you get 6 sick days for 6 months or you get counseled... if you are sick and have a drs note then you should stay home even if you are over your 6 days but with the policy some pp come in anyway... Seriously, I call in sick sometimes when I'm well :)
