XP: Passports

I was looking into passports and the official site said that right now most applicants are getting their passports in 4 to 6 weeks.

Has that been most people's experience? I guess I'm just curious if that estimate is pretty accurate?

DH and I found a great deal on a cruise the first week on January, that we are hoping we can go on. I was wondering if we apply for our passports next week if there would be a chance that we wouldn't get them in time? I know that there's an option to get them expedited, but that's another $60 a person, so I'd prefer not to do that if we don't have to.

TIA!

Re: XP: Passports

  • This summer, DH and I applied 8 weeks out from our HM...  He got his in two weeks, for some reason, mine took four, but we got them in plenty of time! HTH!

  • Do you already have a passport in your maiden name?  If so, you can book your travel under your maiden name and still use that passport as long as it's current.  Otherwise, yes, in my experience the estimated time on the Department of State's website it accurate.  If anything, they pad the time.
  • No, the only passport that I have is one that I got before I was 16, so I'll need to apply as if I've never had one, and DH never has had one.

  • We got ours in about 2 or 3 weeks. I think like GippersGirl said, they usually pad the time and, if not, it's accurate. I would go ahead and go this week just because I am a worry wart, but I think you should be good.
  • If you don't get it and its getting close to the day you leave, you can always call and get it expedited then (and pay the extra $). I had to do that this summer when I took a chance it would be here earlier than their estimated time and it wasn't.
  • Thanks girls. I got all the forms together and we are going to run up during lunch on Tuesday - that will be exactly eight weeks prior to the cruise that we are hoping to take.
  • I got mine last December right before the holidays and it took one week exacly.
  • DH's took like 3-4 weeks.  Also if you had the last one before you were 16, I think it's still considered a renewal.  My last one was from when I was 14-15.
