OMG I am so excited - I am going to be throwing my first baby shower!!
It's a very last-minute thing, since my friend (who's due Jan. 10) and I just discovered we will both be in Boston the second week of November. (DH and I will be housesitting for my aunt & uncle, who graciously offered up their house for the shower as well).
So, now I'm looking for ideas...unfortunately I don't think I have time to send invitations, it will have to be an evite. Any fun ideas for baby-themed games or foods to serve? (Lori I seem to recall some cute diaper-pin cupcakes...) I've only ever been to one baby shower, so I'm looking for some inspiration!
AND, my friend feels quite strongly that she doesn't want people to feel obligated to bring presents. I've been trying to think of a cute non-presenty present that we could all collaborate on. Like maybe a craft activity at the party? (It's a boy, BTW). Or some kind of memory book?
Any good ideas or experiences, send 'em my way!
Re: Baby Shower Ideas!
Sounds fun! I think my sister went to a baby shower where all the food was "mini". Like, mini pulled pork sliders, mini wiener hotdogs, tiny veggie skewers on toothpicks (or skewers cut in half), mini cupcakes, etc. She said it was really cute but looked like a lot of work.
I had a work shower once where they bought plain white onsies and we painted them.
Here are some ideas for a PP that I did a few weeks ago asking about Baby Shower themes. There's a few websites on here that may help you in your planning! GL!
How fun!
I used cupcakes topped with pink and blue plastic baby things - diaper pin, rattle, carriage and bottle - (bought them at the party store...I think they're intended to be scattered on the table as decorations)...to announce my pg at work. Super easy and cute.
For an activity...here's some that I've done for baby showers in the past:
- Make a Diaper Cake - ask each guest to bring a package of disposable dipes (if your Guest of Honor plans to use them...you might ask her first) and provide or decorations for the "cake" like ribbons, small toys, trial size baby lotions/powders, silk flowers, etc. Break the groups into teams to make diaper cakes.

- Fill a bottle with jelly bellies and whoever can guess the number closest to what's inside wins! We gave the bottle filled with jelly bellies as the "prize."
- Using modeling clay, mold a replica of the baby-to-be. The Guest of Honor gets to guess which guest made which replica.
- Have each guest email you a digital photo of them as a baby or young child. Print and mount in a photo album or scrapbook. Have the Guest of Honor guess which baby is which guest.
- Collect "words of wisdom" regarding parenting from each guest and mount them in a photo album or scrapbook for the Guest of Honor.
-Have each guest cut a length of ribbon, string or yarn to the length they think would fit perfectly around mama-to-be's waist. Mama-to-be tries each guest's string/yarn/ribbon and whoever has the one that fits wins a prize.
-Dirty Diaper Game (some might think this is gross, but it's actually pretty hilarious with the right crowd!)
FWIW, most guests will probably bring presents even if they are asked not to do so. So you could do "book" shower and have each guest bring a favorite book from their childhood for the baby or chose some sort of charity they can donate money to in lieu of gifts (like March of Dimes).

here are some cute things you can do
you can make edible pacifiers out of wintergreen lifesaver mints and spice drops and glue the pieces together with icing - just put the lifesavers perpendicular to each other and then the spice drop on top - i can get a pic if you need
make "poopie diapers" and make people guess what kind of candy is in them! take some diapers and warm some fun size halloween candies in the microwave and then moosh the candy inside the diapers (snickers, milky way, 3 musketeers, reeses, hersheys etc) and then label the diapers with #s and have people guess the candy inside
have people guess the size of the mommy's belly - you can buy special paper for this at BRU or you can just buy string...but people can cut out pieces that they think represent the circumference of the baby bump measured around the belly button - super fun
you can play baby bingo - give people a blank bingo board and they can fill in each square with various baby items...as mom opens up her gifts they can mark off the respective squares as she gets things like bibs, socks, clothes, toys, etc. but if she really isn't doing gifts then you can still have a word bank of common baby things and have people fill in their own charts and then you can play bingo the old fashioned way by drawing words out of a hat.
you can have a jar full of baby pins and have people guess how many are in there for a prize
you can also do "name that baby food" and put out some jars/small bowls of unlabeled baby food and have people taste them and guess what they are!

My Food Blog - Good Eats 'n Sweet Treats
Might want to clear this one with the mom-to-be first. I'm one of those people who would NOT think this is super fun and would be greatly annoyed if someone tried to do it at my baby shower - just sayin'.
I like this! Plus, if she is traveling in from out of town (not sure from your post), she probably won't want to lug tons of stuff home. Personally, I wouldn't be comfortable with tons of lavish baby shower gifts, so I would absolutely love something like the book-give or a donation in our family's name to a really great charity. It's a nice way for people to still be generous and a great way to start off the LO's life!
Hey everyone! Thanks for the ideas. I requested that if people did feel like bringing a present, they bring a favorite book from their childhood - I think that is a great idea.
Since it's in the afternoon, I'm going to serve tea and little baby-size tea sandwiches, along with cupcakes, for which I'll try to find the diaper pins. I think I'll definitely do the jelly bellies in a jar thing and I *love* the guess the baby food game, so maybe we'll try that too!
Thanks so much for all of the ideas and links!
