s/o Tivo...

Can you tell me about Tivo and how it compares to DVR? I've had Dish DVR and now have Comcast DVR. If Tivo is cheaper and works well I'd definitely consider switching! What are the pros and cons of Tivo?

Re: s/o Tivo...

  • I went from Tivo to Comcast DVR (which didn't last long) back to Tivo.  I couldn't stand the Comcast DVR for a few reasons- I didn't find the guide to be very reliable.  It didn't always find the newest episode of a show.  Also, if I DVR'd a show that had a lot of repeats throughout the week (The Hills, for example), it would record EACH time, so I had to remember to manually program that program each week.  Tivo is much more reliable in that sense- it lists everything as new or rerun, and rerun can mean new episode but re-shown, so I don't have to manually program it every week like I had to with Comcast. Tivo is just more reliable and user-friendly.  I set it and forget it and it always does what it's supposed to!

What else....Tivo will account for longer episodes for things, and will keep recording if something runs long.  Comcast DVR would not.

Tivo's menu overall is just friendlier.

Also, I really hated trying to fast forward with Comcast DVR- it would always take forever to register once I wanted to stop fast forwarding & I'd end up having to rewind because it had gone too far.

I am a huge Tivo lover and don't have a single negative thing to say about it.  I couldn't wait to get rid of Comcast- it just caused us constant headaches (I mean, as many headaches as can come with tv-watching. :) )

ETA:  Just remembered something else- if you have a Netflix account, Netflix has paired up with Tivo and you can watch some of the movies in your queue directly from your Tivo!

  • Thanks for the info! How does the price compare? And do you still have Comcast cable, just not the Dvr?
  • Yes, we kept our Comcast Cable, Internet and phone; just dropped the DVR.  From what I remember, Comcast was $10.99/month and Tivo is $12.99.  Another thing, though, is that we have Tivo HD, and to have access to the HD channels, Comcast makes us rent some little cards that go in the Tivo.  That's a little bit extra per month.  Still totally worth it IMO.
  • I have one of each, and the Tivo is ten times better.  No contest.

Those are called CableCards.  It's how the HD digital channels are decrypted.  Comcast gives us one of our two CableCards for free, and we have to pay something like $2/month for the second one.
