Re: basal thermometer?

  • I usually recommend a thermometer that goes to the hundredth's place (e.g., 98.36) - I've read that technically you only need one that goes to the tenth (98.3), but the extra digit makes it easier to see temp shifts, since some women don't have very dramatic ones. I know that for my body, the difference between, say 98.51 and 98.59 represented a significant change - if I only had one that measured to the tenth's place, I might have missed the shift.

The BD thermometer you linked to is popular and recommended on Amazon, but it only goes to the tenth, which as I mentioned, doesn't work for all women. I think this is the one I dug up for Nicole a little while back, which goes to the hundredth: clicky

  • I started out with a generic light purple one I found at walgreens but then switched to the BD one.  It did have the hundreths and I guess that was good, but by the time I did actually ovulate (first time in a year) the shift was evident enough that the hundreths would not have mattered.  I also charted on paper (exactly like the ones provided with TCOYF) and it doesn't give you the hundreths on those charts.

I then bought the BD one because I like that it has a backlight, the last temp save feature actually worked (it was spotty, at best with the purple one I had), and I personally like that it occassionally beeped to let me know it was on and working because I was usually temping in the dark.

Oh does it have the hundredths? A lot of the reviews on Amazon and on drugstore sites say it doesn't. How weird!!!

  • thanks for the info!  I didn't realize you need it to go to the 100ths...good to know!

  • I got mine for $10 at Walgreens. I like that it has a memory function so you can temp and go back to sleep and the recall it later to chart.

It's one of those tricky things - *technically* you don't (in TCOYF, it even states you only need one to the tenths), but it really does depend on the person. For most women, to the tenths is fine, but for others - like myself - you need the extra digit to get a clear reading on your chart. So I usually recommend hundredths just in case the woman is like myself. Smile

Like Lori mentioned, you can find them at most drugstores inc Walgreens - they shouldn't be that expensive, but I've seen "special fertility thermometers" selling for like $40 - so don't get sucked in thinking the price must make them better, they work the same as the regular cheapy $10 models. Stick out tongue

  • thanks for all of the info!  I will definitely check out the 10ths vs. 100ths thermometers.  Hopefully I am pg right now & just don't know it yet, but if not, I am going to get serious with charting!
