So, Ben and I are going over baby names - yeah I know it's early and we'll probably change our minds a million times, but I'm bored and I find baby names entertaining. Anyhoo, one of the boy names we both like is Elliot.
My hesitation with this name is that it seems like it's becoming more unisex lately - if you read the Baby Names board, it's suggested pretty equally for both genders, maybe even more for girls (personally, I blame Scrubs
). Silly as it may be, I don't like unisex names - I don't want there to be any gender confusion when we say our child's name (like with the name Grayson, which to me screams boy but is suddenly being used as a girl's name).
So I'm wondering - if you heard the name Elliot, would you assume it was a boy, a girl, or you wouldn't be sure?
Re: is this a boy or a girl name?
Definitely would think boy if I heard that name. I actually didn't realize people are now naming girls that...
Also, I think it's a great boys name!

I would definitely think Elliot is a boys name.
I also notice there are alot of nest/bump things that don't apply in my real life.

Def a boy's name. If I read it on a roster, I would not naturally think of a girl.
There was/is such a trend toward giving girls unisex names, so I think this is just one of names that maybe now goes both ways. I'm finding it really hard to decide on boys' names, so, right now, I'm all for traditional boys' names still being boys' names! I feel like girls already have so many more options.
Me too! I also really love the name but not for a girl. I keep seeing my friend's face everytime I hear that name.
I was also unaware that peeps are naming their girls Elliot; I haven't met any yet. Even if that's the case, however, I bet nearly everyone would think "boy" first. It's absolutely not one of those names -- Kelly, Tracy, Carrie -- that sound like girls names but actually go either way. (I once caught myself emphatically blabbing to a group about how I hate people giving their boys unisex names only to stop myself when I looked a guy named Tracy right in the face. I still don't think I've lived that one down yet).
I really like Elliot for a boys' name.
