Kennedy Vs. Virtua

Reluctant B,

I read your blog and thought that since I have experiences at both hospitals that my input may help.  My first child I delivered at Virtua in Voorhees and my second child I just delivered last month at Kennedy in Washington Township.  Overall I had a better experience at Kennedy in Washington Township.

In Virtua I had to share a room the night I delivered with another patient.  In the morning they did move me to a private room.  It really bothered me to have to share a bathroom with someone after just delivering a baby.

I was also disappointed in the nursing care. My labor and delivery room nurse was vey cold and seemed too busy for me. She was always in a rush which made me more nervous being that I was having my first baby and was scared to death of labor because I had no idea what to expect.

.   Then after I delivered I went to the mother/baby unit where I saw my nurse first thing in the morning and then I didn't see another nurse till the next shift came unless I called to request medicine. When I requested an ice pack for my bottom I was directed to the pantry where I was told I could help myself to the ice packs that were in the freezer. Also I was a first time mom and I received a welcome packet with information on how to care for the baby but the nurse did not do any teaching with me on how to care for my daughter.  Don't get me wrong the nurses were very nice and did answer any questions I had but overall I didn't see them much at all.  I just got the feeling that they were too busy for me. It wasn't what I expected from Virtua.

At Kennedy I delivered my son just last month and had a wonderful more personable experience.  From Labor and Delivery, Mother/Baby Unit, to  the nursery all of the nurses were very attentive and caring.

My Labor and Delivery nurse was there for me throughout my entire labor She was very supportive and caring.  Also, the anesthesiologist was there within 5 minutes of my doctor ordering my epidural and thank goodness it worked great!

The Mother/Baby unit is brand new, clean, and all private rooms!  I didn't have to get my own ice pack, my nurse brought in ice packs for me whenever I needed them. Also which was nice my nurse carried a phone with her that I could call and get her directly whenever I needed her. Before I was discharged home my nurse went over everything with me about how to care for myself and my newborn son.  The nurses took their time with me and I did not feel as if they were too busy or I was annoying them if I had to call for something.

My OB delivers at both Virtua and Kennedy and I'm glad I chose to deliver this time at Kennedy.  Overall I myself  had a wonderful experience and would recommend Kennedy over Virtua.  Good luck to you in whatever you decide,  I hope you find my experiences helpful. Take care.

Re: Kennedy Vs. Virtua

  • Hi there!  Thanks so much for your response.  I'm amazed at the differences in your experiences.  It looks like I have a lot of research to do.

The practice that I go to, the doctors deliver at either Lourdes, Virtua, or Kennedy.  I think only 2 of them deliver at both Virtua & Kennedy.

  • I delivered at Virtua (memorial/Mt. Holly) and had a great experience....they did used to have room sharing but they have since opened up a new wing so it rarely happens anymore (and it was really busy the second time). IDK I felt I got a TON of support there......I do not hear great things about Voorhees though.
