is this a boy or a girl name?

So, Ben and I are going over baby names - yeah I know it's early and we'll probably change our minds a million times, but I'm bored and I find baby names entertaining. Anyhoo, one of the boy names we both like is Elliot.

My hesitation with this name is that it seems like it's becoming more unisex lately - if you read the Baby Names board, it's suggested pretty equally for both genders, maybe even more for girls (personally, I blame Scrubs Stick out tongue). Silly as it may be, I don't like unisex names - I don't want there to be any gender confusion when we say our child's name (like with the name Grayson, which to me screams boy but is suddenly being used as a girl's name).

So I'm wondering - if you heard the name Elliot, would you assume it was a boy, a girl, or you wouldn't be sure?

Re: is this a boy or a girl name?

  • I think boy....but I like the name.
  • I like the name but not for a girl!

  • Definitely would think boy if I heard that name. I actually didn't realize people are now naming girls that...

Also, I think it's a great boys name!

  • I have a guy friend named Elliot, so that defines the name for me.
  • I would assume boy.  If I saw it was a girl I wouldn't be shocked, but would definitely assume boy.
  • I have never heard of this for a girl...interesting!

  • I would definitely think it could be for either, but I am also a fan of Scrubs so I've had girl-Elliot exposure.

  • I would have to say boy.
  • I voted boy. Funny that you mentioned Grayson. That's our boys name if we ever get a boy :) DH and I love it and to me it screams boy, just like Elliot. Who cares what other people think, it's your baby!

I've finally let it stop bothering when I introduce Bella and they say "oh Isabella" and I say "Nope just Bella!"... sometimes I get a weird look and sometimes not... It used to make me want to choke them but now I'm just assuming they are idiots :) If her name were Isabella, I'd introduce her as that! :)

    Ditto

  • Thanks ladies! This makes me feel better about keeping it on our list. Maybe it's one of those weird Knot/Nest/Bump things and not so much a "real world" thing. Stick out tongue
  • Hm, I've actually never heard it used as a girl's name (I don't get out much =P) so it totally sounds like a boy's name to me. Cute name though =)

I would definitely think Elliot is a boys name.

I also notice there are alot of nest/bump things that don't apply in my real life.

  • I have a friend who named her daughter Elliot and calls her Ellie (like my dog!).  But she likes boy/gender neutral for her girls.

  • Def a boy's name.  If I read it on a roster, I would not naturally think of a girl.

There was/is such a trend toward giving girls unisex names, so I think this is just one of names that maybe now goes both ways.  I'm finding it really hard to decide on boys' names, so, right now, I'm all for traditional boys' names still being boys' names!  I feel like girls already have so many more options.  Wink

  • dd's good friend is named elliott after a family member, its a female.  they call her ellie for short.  so i think it can be either.
  • I voted for boy! I don't haven't of any girl named Elliot.

Me too!  I also really love the name but not for a girl.  I keep seeing my friend's face everytime I hear that name.

  • I was also unaware that peeps are naming their girls Elliot; I haven't met any yet.  Even if that's the case, however, I bet nearly everyone would think "boy" first.  It's absolutely not one of those names -- Kelly, Tracy, Carrie -- that sound like girls names but actually go either way.  (I once caught myself emphatically blabbing to a group about how I hate people giving their boys unisex names only to stop myself when I looked a guy named Tracy right in the face.  I still don't think I've lived that one down yet).

I really like Elliot for a boys' name.
