new stove

Hi Ladies!!!

About 2 months ago i killed our stove. I was cooking corned beef and it boiled over while i was looking for something for my DH. Needless to say our stove was from when the house was built...back in the 50's, and they can not find any pieces to fix it so they are getting us a new one. Yay!

Any suggestions on brand or type? Thanks ladies!!!

Re: new stove

  • gas or electric?  ours is gas.  I like the gas burners, don't like the gas oven so much, but dual fuel ones are expensive.  I wish I had bought one with super sturdy burners and burner liners for easy clean up.  I grew up with an electric stove and they all have burner pans/liners for cleanup.  And get a self-cleaning oven!  I might only clean it twice a year but the feature is worth it!  I'm not sure what brand I have (whirlpool maybe??)  I spent $5-600 about 5 years ago, I wish I had spent another $2-300 to get a really great stove.  you can get a good one for $500 but I think you can get so much more for a little more money.

  • If you are doing simple cooking techniques (boiling water, etc) then I would get an electric (if you have a gas range now, you'll have to see if you have a plug for it, you probably need a 3 prong plug vs a 4 prong because they changed it in the 90's. Also, I'd recommend getting a smoothtop with the self-cleaning options (as opposed to the coils). It's much much easier to clean up, however you're not supposed to use Cast Iron on the smooth tops as it scratches the surfaces. Good brands are Whirlpool, GE, LG, Siemens, Maytag (they are owned by Whirlpool now), Samsung. I'd avoid Fridgidaire, they aren't known for their quality or longevity these days.

Do you have a glass top? All of the people I know with glass tops hate them. I can't recommend a stove because I have never bought one. Plus I am a gas girl and will never have an electric stove.
  • We have all Frigidaire now and we have been happy. What is your current stove? I would say if it has lasted 50+ years....it is a good brand!

  • Our stove just kicked the bucket as well. We went to Roecker and Berger and got a Frigidaire ceramic top. I'm not a fan of the coil tops.

We were able to get them to knock some of the price down since we took it home that day. It's got some unnecessarily fancy features like a warming pad, and the two burners on the front can be either 6" or 9", and a convection oven (which I still don't know what that means...). I honestly don't do much cooking, but I figured we would have it for a while, and eventually maybe I'll learn to cook. Good luck!

  • My aunt's mother cracked her smooth top-expensive!  But it's hard to find a higher end one with coils.  But yes, I'm all for gas now too!

  • I'd about kill for a gas stove!

We have a 10-year-old GE electric and it's just ok. I don't like the coils, I'd rather have a smooth top. I would stay away from Maytag, they're toward the top of the list for repair issues.

Consumer Reports recommends the GEs, Whirlpools, and Kenmores for smoothtops, and GE and Kenmore for coils. (I only know that because we just bought a new dishwasher and I drooled over the range section while I was on the site!)

  • Thanks ladies for all your help! I guess i should of told you more about the stove. It is a Frigidaire by general motors (yes, it says that on the stove), and also it is just the stove, the oven is in the wall beside of it. We just got our house in may so it is under the home warrenty. They are dragging their feet, (it has been 2 months that we have been going back and forth) and we are still waiting on them to tell us what they could get us or we could get our own and they would pay us so much. Also, it is a 32 inch which apprently is not a regular size so it is taking awile. The only ones we have seen (through sears, since that is who they use) are more expensive then what they had told us last week. They are still telling us that they will get back ahold of us when they find one for us. I am getting angry at them and my DH just keeps telling me to relax and that it will get done. What would you ladies do?
  • I don't have much of an opinion other than I have a smoothtop and bar tenders' friend or bar keepers friend or whatever it is works wonders for keeping it clean!  I make sure to clean it between uses otherwise getting any burnt on items or marks off is a bear.

BTW_  did you/ do  you play water polo?  Just guessing from your SN.  I didn't play in HS, but I did play for Miami in college.

  • I did play water polo in HS. I am thinking about getting into a masters program around here. I so miss it. I was a goalie...what position did you play?
  • I usually ended up at 2m, but we didn't have set positions.  Lots of driving and more based on who got down the pool first.  Did you play locally?  I know there is a masters program that practices at Milford, but they were more intense than what I was looking for.  As in, expected to be at nearly every practice, lots of traveling on the weekends, etc. I just don't have the time to commit to that. Their practices are 9-10:30 at night or something along those lines.  Much too late for me- esp with a long drive afterwards.  They are called the squirrels, though, and a bunch of nice people if that is what you are looking for.  If you hear of any other, more laid back teams, let me know.  I'm definitely interested!
  • I played for Napoleon (northwest ohio). I have heard of the squirrels and have also heard how much they wanted you to be everywhere and do everything. I will keep my eye out for any other team.
