Christmas Shopping

Do you set a budget? Is it a per person budget or just overall?

Re: Christmas Shopping

  • Yes.  Our budget usually varies per person.  But we've been putting cash aside every month since July so we aren't slammed in Dec.

I need to start shopping.  I just have too much other stuff that needs to be done before then.  I need a personal assistant.  Any volunteers?

  • we usually spend about $50/person for parents, sibings, etc. I try to stay as close to that as possible since we buy for a shi!tload of people. Friends and namedrawn people are usually $20-30.

I've been handing off a lot of things to my mom. She's retired and likes to run errands for family members and clean our house too. But I won't give her Christmas shopping! I lurve that! I just give her exchanges/returns. lol

  • We normally do $50 per parent and $25 per sibling.  Last year we did more bc we had some extra money but this year with dr bills and planning for a baby its going to be slim pickings.  :)

If she'd like to come do some charity work for me, I would not be opposed to that.

  • usually i have no idea how much gets spent each year. this year, however, i have an Excel sheet with everything i buy and the price and who gets it. my list is shorter this year though. its to the point where i feel that Christmas is all about my kids. so they will get the most out of the christmas budget. DH got his PS3 and i got my camera already, so we dont plan on really giving much to each other, although when that christmas bonus comes up...i do plan on sneaking my hints for an iphone! i mean, my bday is 2 weeks later  too!

also, i usually dont spend much on teachers/child care providers, but this year i am actually spending more money and time, i have meade each of them fleece blankets. and today i brought in 3 of the blankets that are yellow with purple paws with the purple background, and sold them all for $25 each to my coworkers so that is kinda my little side job for now and everyone loves them.

since my brother and his wife are going to be in ohio, we decided not to exchange gifts this year, they said they still got for the kids though. plus it gets to the point of what to buy someone.

  • I was just browsing the ToyRus site! I haven't given it much thought yet, but I need to. I have an overall budget that I'd like to stay within.

The internet is my friend for Christmas shopping. Forget running myself crazy from store to store.

  • christmas shopping wow i havent even thought about it yet. guess i better get started and i do the same i order almost everything so i dont have to deal with traffic.
  • Yes, we did this last night. A budget per person and added it up. Works like a dream...

Sometimes. I pay her now b/c I hire her for my side biz sometimes so now I feel guilty for not paying her for something. Cruel world.

  • What's funny is I wouldn't let me my mom clean my house, because I would have to go behind her and clean it again which would only tick me off. She is the WORST housekeeper ever! Plus everytime she visits she breaks something.

  • we stick to a budget for Christmas.  We don't go crazy spending on each other, just little token gifts.  We have a set amount we try to stay near for Elise and family members.  This year we're swapping names in my family so that will help a lot.  And for friends I just give homemade (food) gifts.

  • Before kids we bought for his entire family and my entire family and each other, around 15 people. We usually spent about $50 on parents and then $20ish on everyone else. Now we strictly buy for Cole and Cate (and a bone for the dogs). It's around $100 per kid, but this year Cate will get just a few small things and we'll put the rest up in her savings account.
