This is going to come off long winded and completely uneccessary, but I thought I would share.
DH and I missed the 30 day window to opt into eachother's health insurance policies right when we got married so we just ended up keeping our individual policies until open enrollment started at either or our jobs. My insurance kinda sucks where I work, so we weren't 100% positive he was going to switch to mine even though it was cheaper.
DH just started a new job at a new hospital yesterday (I'll add that his new job is at a Catholic hospital run by the arch diocese (sp?)). He brought home all his crap from his orientation last night pertaining to insurance so we could look it over and decide whether or not I wanted to get on his policy or switch to mine since we have open enrollment until Nov. 13.
He has 2 options of policies. 1 is something like $200 a month and you can go anywhere you want and it has a couple of copays. It's a decent plan, but still, a little expensive.
(this is the inportant part of the story)..
The other option basically covers us for anything we have done under the umbrella of the hospital he works for (which fortunately covers just about anything we need done) for like $70 a month (awesome and cheap!)
This is the kicker....since the hospital is Catholic, the cheap insurance plan covers NOTHING, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING pertaining to birth control, voluntary sterilzation, or anything to do with IVF, freezing sperm/eggs, since it is against the Catholic faith.
It really blows my mind that in the year 2010 that something like this is still an issue.

What does tl;dr mean?
Nevermind, I googled -
Said whenever a nerd makes a post that is too long to bother reading.
Glad I'm not the only one not getting that.
Regarding what they cover, I'm not surprised at all. It goes against their religion and they have the right to refuse to cover it...just as you have the right to chose other insurance. I really don't understand why its surprising at all that they'd have that caveat to their insurance.

Obviously they have the right to cover what they want and what they don't want, but its just crazy to me seeing as probably a pretty large portion of the population uses birthcontrol.
I guess I understand the BC thing, but the fact that they don't cover assistance in trying to conceive is crazy. Do they honestly believe that "God made you so you couldn't have children, so a catholic hospital shouldn't help you in trying to create a child."
They also don't cover anything that is abortion related. Say you get an abortion and then 5 years down the road you have something wrong with you that is a result of having the abortion, that's not covered either.
That's the thing that gets me. The hospital will provide it, but they want you to pay full price for it. It seems like kind of an all or nothing thing for me.
It's like saying okay, well I don't believe in it, but if you're paying full price for it, we're okay with profiting from it. It just doesn't make sense to me.
And Clarisa, to answer your question. I am going to go with the plan that doesn't pay for the BC. I am getting an IUD put in in a couple of weeks (I will still be covered under my insurance). The removal and any treatment (if I happen to have side effects) will not be covered under our new insurance.
Even then though, the difference between the 2 insurance plans is something like $200 a month total. With the more expsensive plan I have more freedom for doctors I want to see, but I still have to end up paying copays, and deductibles. Even if I have to pay out of pocked for BC related stuff, in the end I still think it ends up being a lot cheaper to go with the less expensive plan.
Ew, in that case I agree with you. If it was a hospital that flat out refused any of these services in the first place, then obviously it would make sense that with your one-provider insurance plan you wouldn't be covered under any of these things.
OK, that makes no sense to me. Why are they providing the service if they are a religious institution and it goes against their beliefs?

Wow that is ridiculous! actually it made me laugh. Organized religion, I guess I'll never really understand it.
I could come up with a non-politically correct excuse for that, but I will keep it to myself. It's just another reason why I don't understand the Catholic religion.
Junebug-you're from Ma, it's the Caritas Group that runs St. Elizabeth's, Boston Medical Center, and a million other places around the Boston area. Almost every decent doctor in my area is somehow associated with them which is good bc I'll be covered.
I just don't understand how an hospital or insurance provider could say they're against something but openly accept profits from the thing they claim they're against. It's very contradictory.
Yeah, I remember Caritas from when I was up that way. They are a lot like Sentara is down here...everywhere.
The contradiction still baffles me. Totally understand and am not surprised by them not covering it...but providing it is acceptable?

I am Catholic and honestly I am extremely surprised the insurance wouldn't cover birth control and the other things you mentioned.... Insurance is a medical business, not a religious one. Weird.
I guess I will also add that I may not be considered a good Catholic as I use BC, had two babies out of wedlock and support gay marriage. LOL!?
