Tell me about Thanksgiving.

It's looking like DH and I are staying in the city for Thanksgiving.  Normally I'd be ALL about cooking, even with just the two of us, but I'm not sure our pathetic little oven could even hold a Turkey!

I know Manhattanites are not big cookers, generally....do most people go out on Thanksgiving?  Is there anything exciting happening in the city that weekend, aside from the parade? (Which I'm sure we'll just watch on TV....no way do I care enough about it to brave the crowds!)

Re: Tell me about Thanksgiving.

  • without really knowing it at first, DH & i did ourselves the biggest favor ever - claimed thanksgiving as "ours" from the year we started dating so it's always about what we want to do :)

the last two years, we've had very chill thanksgivings at home with my homemade mac & cheese and staying in our pajamas. our first year i made a big turkey for just us and i doubt i'll ever do it again because it was so much work for two people (and neither of us loves turkey)

this year we're off to scout neighborhoods in d.c. so we're spending turkey day with my bff in VA then the rest of the weekend in d.c. i'll be bringing plenty of wine & treats since we won't be arriving in time to help my bff with the prep. ?

  • Thanksgiving tradition for us growing up was hitting Katz's for a hot dog and a knish after the parade, yes before we'd head home and eat obscene amounts of turkey et al. There's something I love about Katz's on Thanksgiving Day.
  • PS: AWESOME time on the marathon, BTW.
  • Thanks!  I am pretty happy with it! :)

We haven't been to Katz's yet and I really want to go.  That sounds like a fun Thanksgiving tradition - thanks for the idea!

  • We're not sure what our plans will be either. It depends if DH has off that Friday or not. If he doesn't, we'll be in the city and I've started considering having an "Orphan Thanksgiving". I heard about the idea from someone else, but basically you just invite all the single or couples that aren't going to visit family and have a pot luck style turkey day.

I'll post if we are in the city - I'd be more than happy to invite any and all who'd want to join for an Orphan Thanksgiving! The one year we did stay in the city just the two of us, I made an amazing turkey breast rolled & stuffed with stuffing and herbs.

  • We usually spend the holidays with alternating families. 1 year with my family the next with DH's. It works out well and everyone is happy. =)

But, there are endless possibilities in NYC for Turkey day. There definitely isn't anything wrong with going out to dinner...tons of people do it. The plus side is you don't have to clean any mess.

  • DH and I are taking the baby upstate somewhere....dont know where yet, but we're just going to take our "little family" on a road trip. We might head up to the Ithaca area, I went to school at SUNY Cortland for 2 years, so I might show them the campus and places I used to go then I'll take them to the Ithaca Falls...nothing set in stone, but I'm really excited about just going away the 3 of us. Not having to cook this year will be pure joy for me :) We usually spend Thanksgiving with my family, (they come here), but theres some family drama going on right now, so we're just going to get away from it all. Hopefully everything will be cleared up and okay for Christamas dinner!
