anybody go to art galleries?

There's a TON of them by my office and I always say that I want to go check them out, but I always feel like an idiot so I never go.

I've never been to a gallery before but I feel like I'm really missing out on something cool.

Re: anybody go to art galleries?

  • Hi, I am new here!  I love art galleries!  My favorite is The Met.  I think it is cool to go alone, because you can spend as much or as little time as you like.  Maybe we can meet up one day and check out a gallery.
  • hmm, if you've never been to an art gallery it might be helpful to go to one of the main art museums in the city. Get a feel for what its like to "walk around and look at art". Then when you go into a smaller gallery, you don't feel completely lost or out of place - but definitely check them out!! sometimes it only takes a few minutes to go through it and you can get a completely new perspective. Always check out the artist information (usually at the receptionist desk or by the front) - this will give you more insight on the artist's idea, purpose, thoughts on what you would be looking at.

    have fun!!

  • hmmm... maybe you're right Liza, maybe some place bigger might be better for me to get comfortable.

adozenroses - I'd love to meet up sometime and check out a gallery.

  • I'd say head on in. I am usually directed by my sister who's familiar with the general NYC art scene, but DH and I will wander in and out now and again. Time Out NY lists current shows at galleries around town if you want to look for something specific. And I think the general "rule" is that if you hit a rate of 1 out of 4--meaning 3 in which you politely look at the works and then leave asking yourself: what the hell was that?--you're having a good day. (And that's not just my untrained eye, my sister admits to as much; the great thing about NY are all the opportunities to see art, but pleantitude does not necessarily mean it's all great.)

     Enjoy.

  • I say totally go and check them out.  What have you got to loose!  I love looking at art.  If I was rich, our house would be full of art.  We always check out local galleries when we are away and try to find a small inexpensive piece to bring home.  You never know who might be the next hot artist!
