My greatest culinary achievement!

Gravy.  From scratch.

Yes, go ahead and laugh.  After 29 years, I finally got brave and decided to conquer roux.  All the talk about Thanksgiving got me hungry for turkey and gravy so I made do with the stuff I already had at home to satisfy the craving.  Pan-fried chicken breasts with mushroom country gravy.  I cannot wait for dinner tonight!  Hope John gets home soon!!

Anyone else have any proud moments in their cooking life to share?  Smile

Re: My greatest culinary achievement!

  • Woohoo!  Sounds like you'll be eating well tonight.  My proudest cooking achievement is getting Keith to make dinner.  :p
  • that's awesome!!

my biggest moment was when i was first able to use yeast and didn't end up with a hard, flat, rock!! :)

  • awesome! i normally mke mushroom gravy during TG and bring it to TG dinner at the ILs. DH is vegetarian so he cant have the regular meat gravy.

hmm..i guess everytime i try a new recipe and DH loves it is a defining moment for me..lol

  • sounds really good! YUMMY

I consider it a big achievement anytime I get off my butt and try to cook something, and if it turns out enjoyable to eat- bonus!

  • the first time I successfully made a bouche de noel (yule log) all by myself at Christmas.  the first year was a complete disaster, but the second time was a charm

  • Hurray!  Sounds very yummy :)  Every time I make breads/pastries and sub in a non-wheat flour and it actually works, I feel very proud and happy.  My wheat-free, dairy-free spelt banana bread was my most recent victory!
  • LOL gravy is one of those things that's so scary on the surface, but when you actually do it you think, "Oh. Well that wasn't so bad." Although there's always that one lumpy moment about 1/3 of the way through where I invariably think it's not going to work and I'll have to scrap the whole thing...

Let's see, proud moments...I was pretty proud of making pretzels from scratch!

  • SO, how did it go over?  Did Join luv it?  Did you take a picture??

And, I know- aren't those chocolate cookie mushrooms great?  My MIL says she used to make meringue mushrooms for the log but likes the little Japanese ones much better.  Smile
