This morning a big black cockroach greeted me in my bathroom. I am FREAKING OUT. I looked up the type of roach and it seems to be an oriental roach (according to various websites, they are the most 'repulsive' roaches. Great.
Is there a way to tell if you have an infestation of roaches, or if one just came in maybe on a shoe or something? We had a party at our house on Saturday so there is a possibility of this. I just really don't want my house to be infested.
When is it time to call the bug man?
Any advice is appreciated
Re: Roaches!!!!
It's time! I can't remember, are you renting? Did you have the rodent problem too? If so I'd have a long talk with your landlord about breaking the lease. An exterminator can do way more than you can so I'd call.
We bought our house in May. At our old apartment we did have a rodent problem (actually I think it might have been a racoon problem. That thing ate three or four trays of poison before it went away). Right now, I am fighting my husband on having the exterminator come out. He thinks we can handle it with traps. I personally don't want to handle it at all. I want to know that there are no bugs in the house.
Dh is an exterminator and he says that roaches are something you don't want to treat on your own (well you can, but the problem will never go away). The exterminator will spray/treat & ask you to do certain things around the house too.
FYI, DH says that the big national company that starts with a T doesn't have the best reputation in the pest control industry. DH used to work for a big local company in Cincy-they were good, just not good to work for.
Having lived in Texas, I am sadly familiar with all varieties of roaches. The type you are referring to is commonly referred to down there as a "sewer roach", because they crawl along sewer pipes and like the damp. Especially considering you found the little (big) bugger in the bathroom, I would guess. They are icky, though. The general knowledge regarding those, at least down there, was that these guys generally live outside and happen to get lost and wander inside. The nasty little silvery ones (german cockroaches) are the ones to worry about.
Here's a helpful link about treatment you can do yourself:
