Moving Day is Saturday - any advice?

Everyone is kind of freaking me out acting like it is going to be so stressful and crazy.  We have about 10 guys helping us, we rented a big truck to get everything out of the storage unit and to the house 10 minutes down the road.   I really wanted to pay movers to move the furniture and we could move the boxes, but DH and my dad insist that they can do it.

DH helped a friend move a few weeks ago and he said the worst part was not seeing our friend and his wife to ask where something should go.  So I made a list of furniture and which room it should go into so I can post it by the door in case I am not around.  I am also going to put bright green post its on the boxes with the room that they should go in so when we hand them off the truck everyone knows where to go with them.

Any tips or things you learned if you moved yourself?

Re: Moving Day is Saturday - any advice?

  • you have the right idea of putting the room of where stuff goes on the boxes, but also put signs on the doors of the different rooms at the new place to match.

Load the big stuff to the front of the truck, and stack stuff around it. However, you should unload things first to the lawn so you can bring the furniture in first. If you are making multiple trips, make sure you have tie downs to secure things.

Are the fragile boxes marked well?

Pay your helpers in food and beer when finished.

  • I have tons of beer, soft drinks, water and food ready for them;)

Fragile boxes are marked very clearly.

We're thinking we can get it all in one trip.  The truck is bigger than the storage unit and we have 2 guys with full size trucks.

I didn't think about unloading the boxes and setting aside.  We will definitely have to do that.  We don't have a lawn yet, but they will have to go in the garage and on the driveway.  The storage unit has boxes all in the back and furniture in front so that means furniture will be in the front of the truck and boxes will be first out.  I'll have to make sure we don't start cluttering up rooms with boxes and making it harder for furniture to get in.

    Thanks! !

  • Sounds to me like you have it all together!

Congrats on moving day, may it be stress free :)

  • I agree that the hardest part is when you have a bunch of people unloading and not knowing where to go. I know you will feel like you aren't helping but the best thing is for you to pretty much stand at the truck and direct traffic, that will keep things moving! We just moved and then helped my cousin and her DH move a month later and both times knowing where stuff went was the delay so just stand at the truck and point and you should be good to go!

  • I think you've got it all. I would make sure to leave out some cleaning supplies, even in a new construction some stuff might need to be touched up. Make sure you have toliet paper and a few lawn chairs for people to take a quick break and drink some water.

Gosh I feel like it was just yesterday that you were debating on new construction or preowned!

    Happy Moving Day!!

PS 6 months later I still have boxes that aren't unpacked so don't feel like you have to get it all done in one weekend!

  • Oh my gosh. It's here already!  Congratulations.

You have most of the things lined up already so have confidence in your pre-planning skills.  It will be hectic but you've done what you can do minimize stress.

Just a few things I would add:

    • Try to take just a few pictures that day so you can look back later.
    • Get plenty of sleep the night before.
    • Take a few minutes to stretch and do some deep breathing before everything starts that morning.

Good luck!  Can't wait to see pictures.
