VERY strange call...

So the strangest thing just happened to me.

I got a phone call and the woman says "I'm just calling to confirm your appointment with Donna for Nov. 5th at 3:45 at Mass Eye and Ear in Bridgwater"  and I just sat there for a minute confused because I didn't set up an appointment.  Say I said, I think you have the wrong person... But she confirmed my name (although it was my maiden name) my DOB and a previous address that I had in fact lived at.  She said it was an appointment to have my hearing tested and to get fitted for HEARING AIDES?!!

Um, I do have mild hearing loss from repeated ear infections as a child, but NEVER made this appointment and I don't even have medical insurance!!

Now my mind is racing, how did they have all my info if I never made the appointment??  I am so confused

Re: VERY strange call...

  • That's really weird.  Did you tell her you're not going to the appointment?  I'd call your PCP if you have one.  Also I would look up the number for Mass Eye and Ear in Bridgewater and make sure it's the same one that called you.
  • Baker might be on to something with the PCP. Maybe your regular doctor's office mixed up two records and scheduled an appointment via referral for you instead of another patient by accident. It's a little bit far-fetched, but not impossible.

I'd be a little freaked out by that call too but hopefully it's nothing.

  • I told them I would not be at the appointment and did google the number and it was correct...  I told DH and he said I should call them back and ask them to call me if someone does actually show up for the appointment since he says he's concerned about identity theft.  My big thing, if it was identity theft, why give the Dr. office MY phone number?  Wouldn't you know the doctor is likely to call to confirm??  If that was the case, why not just give them YOUR number?

  • I don't really have a PCP, my primary doctor that I see once a year is an OB/GYN, so I find it unlikely that they would be referring a patient for hearing aides.

  • Well insurance doesn't pay for hearing tests or hearing aids, so that is a moot point (I know, I just shelled out a pretty penny for my new ones) but that is odd that they have your information. You're sure your DH or someone didn't take the liberty of booking an appt for you? (which would be really weird...)

  • I don't have insurance, so I know no one would be paying for them regardless.

I asked my DH and he said that he didn't because that was my first thought.  And the appointment was under my maiden name.

My DH is very concerned about identity theft but like I said, the phone number is what perplexes me, you would think if that was the case, who ever it was would use THEIR own number...

I'm not sure what to do, if anything

  • PHEW!!!  I figured it out.  I called them back to ask some questions, and it does appear to be a mistake.  A few years back I had lump in my neck looked at by a specialist and apparently they have another patient at this office with my maiden name, and when the specialist there refered this other person to Mass Eye and Ear, they sent over MY file rather than the correct person...

Makes me feel better to know there isn't someone out there running around posing as me!

  • That's so crazy, I'm glad you figured it out!

  • Yep, my old doctor used to have another patient with my same name.  I was RnV-B and the other person was RnV-A Stick out tongue  Once I figured out there were two of us I always told the person answering the phone that it was "B" calling.

    Glad you figured it out!

  • I am glad too but the strangest part about the mistake is the correct person has a different first name than me, but it does start with the same letter, but you would think that would be more careful especially since the first name was different.

Oh well, it made for an interesting morning nonetheless

  • Glad it's all sorted out.  I hope the actual patient knows about her appointment now!

Definitely!  Actually, I would hope that would confirm more than the first and last name when requesting/sending the file, as that is not necessarily a unique identifier.  Kind of common sense when handling records of data.
