Re: locksmith rec

  • We did this when we bought our house last year. We got all the doors re-keyed. Here is the info on the company we used. (sorry it is so big, I copied and pasted from an email). The technician came out and did a great job. One of our doors was sticking and he fixed it free of charge. I highly recommend them.

For a flat rate of $59.99 + tax where applicable, anywhere in our service area, we change the keys that operate the locks on your home or rental property. We don't actually "change the locks", we change the internal coding of the locks so that the old keys no longer work and you have a brand new set of keys instead. *Our Rekey Deal includes a mobile locksmith service call, rekeying up to 6 keyholes (deadbolts and doorknobs only), and providing up to 4 new keys.
  • We changed ours ourselves.  You can buy new locks at any hardware store/Lowes/Home Depot.  There are instructions included on how to replace.

Edit: We wanted to replace all of the existing hardware (locks and knobs) on all doors throughout our house.  This was one reason we replaced the entire lock rather than have the existing one rekeyed.

  • DH bought new locks from Lowe's and changed them on his own. It was pretty easy.

  • Depending on how many external doors you have, it was cheaper for us to have someone come rekey the existing locks instead of replacing them.

I can't remember at all who we used, but I think I ended up just going to the bbb website, calling a few locksmiths and going with the best price.

Thanks Carla!  we are just planning on rekeying, we're not ready to replace all the actual handles and locks
