This doesn't sound right to me (credit card related) - LONGish

So, DH & I generally don't carry any credit card debt, but we put our vacation from last month on our credit card, knowing that we should be able to pay it off in 6 mo or so.

So, I decided that in addition to the regular payment, I would send in an add'l $10 a week, to whittle down the balance. I figured this would be an easy way to pay an extra $40/mo without really noticing that we're paying extra. Does that make sense?

So they just called DH & said that we were overdue. DH talked to them, and the girl told him that (if I understand this right) they consider whatever our last payment was our "regular" payment. So even if our total payments for the month are over our minimum payment, if our last payment wasn't equal to or over our minimum payment required, then we are considered past due.

Does that make any sense at all? It doesn't to me. She asked if he could pay $130 today. He told her he would if they reversed the overdue charges. She complied.

So that's good, that we don't have to pay the charges now, but this just doesn't seem right to me.

I'm starting to think they made it up to get more $$ from us. Like maybe they're freaking because we don't normally charge stuff, then all of a sudden we charge a large amount so they're trying to get as much $$ from us as possible because they're afraid we're not gonna pay it or something?!?

I don't know. Just sounds really weird to me.

  • That doesn't sound right to me. If your minumum is due on 11/15 and it is $100 you pay $100 prior to 11/15 but also decide to pay $30 on 11/10 your minimum payment cannot be $30. It has to be either the $100 or the $130. I would call to speak to a manager and threaten to report them. If you paid the $100 in 4 installments of $25 as long as it is before 11/15 it should be $100.
  • I carry a balance on one CC because it is 0% interest and I pay different amounts every single month, some months I pay additional payments and other months I just make one payment. Either way I do it, it's never the same each month. That being said, my mimimum payment never changes based on what I pay, it is always a consistant % of the balance owed. This does not seem correct and I would look in to it a bit further. What CC company is it? I have Discover, Citi, AMEX and a multitude of other store cards and I have never had this issue with any of them or any other CC in the past.

  • It's Citi.

We've never had a problem with them either, and DH has had this particular account for quite a few years. Before I came along. And I had them a long time ago, and remember that they were great for customer service & such.

I'm just wondering if the banks have had so many people lose their jobs & start defaulting, that now they're freaking out? Like us suddenly charging a large sum was a red flag or something, so now they're afraid they won't get their money or something?

IDK. In the long run it doesn't really matter. We just basically ended up paying an extra $130 this month, so it'll get paid off sooner right? Still. Just doesn't seem right to do that.
  • Unless they've changed their rules, that's definitely not right.  I've had a Citi card for almost 8 years now.  Before DH and I were married, I would make multiple payments each month.  I would pay my portion of the charges from my bank account and "our" portion from our joint account.  They never once said anything to me about only my last payment counting towards the minimum.  That's nuts.  If you paid the money, you paid the money!

I do believe there is a limit on the number of payments you can make each statement period (at least online).  I want to say it is 3.  Is it possible that you exceeded that limit so they only counted the first three payments you made which, perhaps did not meet the minimum?

  • This sounds fishy to me. Guitar Center (which is credited through HSBC I think) tried to pull a fast one on us back in the summer by revoking our special offer before it was time for it to be up - then charging us a whole bunch of fees. I argued with them for an hour but got the offer back and all the fees reversed.

Anyway, I would definitely question that. Your minimum payment changes each month anyway as your balance decreases...it's just an equation of your interest and whatever the balance is. So the rep's reasoning is stupid to begin with.

  • I was going to ask if you were talking about Bank of America because they did the same thing to us! Our monthly payment was like $60. It was due 10/14. After paying Septembers, I paid $20 a week. So by the time the payment was due, I had already paid $80. They tried to charge me late fees because I didn't pay it all at once. I've since closed that card because they tried crap like that every month.
