I haz a sad.

This morning my boss told me that we have a very big project coming up, the first stage of which will be during the final weeks of December.  J and I have a vacation scheduled during those same two weeks.

So, we'll most likely have to cancel our trip.  My boss will decide over the weekend if I can be gone the 21st-25th ("gone" = working remotely), or not at all.  This time was supposed to be spent celebrating Christmas with J's parents, and NYE with my mom and sister.  Instead, I'll be spending part or all of it in the office, working overtime on a difficult/stressful project.

We only see our families once a year and we go to a lot of trouble to schedule trips at least 6-9 months in advance, and still this happens.  I feel so disappointed.  We can reschedule for next spring, but the holidays are important to me.  Missing Thanksgiving with my family is hard enough, now Christmas too?

Believe me, I know there are lots of people with much bigger problems!  I don't mean to be selfish, I just needed to vent and I haven't told J yet.  This trip is a REALLY big deal to his parents and he's not going to take the news well.

Re: I haz a sad.

  • That really sucks! Sometimes work is a big PITA! I hope your boss lets you take your vacay. The holidays are a really special time and you are NOT being selfish at all. Hope it all works out!

  • I'm sorry - that really sucks.... is there any way you could work away from the office? I mean, surely they have to understand that it's the holidays and people make plans? what would happen if you said you already booked tix and can only work remotely? would they get upset that you didn't check w/them first?
  • I'm so sorry. That really sucks. I hope something works out for you Right Hug

Our bosses signed off on the trip 8 months ago (didn't realize this was coming up, I guess?), so they know the tickets are already booked.  They offered to reimburse us for the costs.

I usually work remotely while on vacay, just to stay caught up, so my boss knows that's an option.  I'm hoping that we can work something out, at least for the first week.  If I have to come back early, fine, but I'd rather not lose the entire trip.  We'll see!

  • well I hope you can work something out to where you dont' have to come back early at all... that's great that they will reimburse you for the travel costs but at the same time, not being able to spend the holidays with family is priceless and i hope they can understand that it's really important to you.  I hope you can talk to them and get them to allow you to work remotely the whole time so you don't have to miss out on anything

Ditto to this.  I'm so sorry :(  I hope something can be worked out.

  • Oh no! I really hope you can work something out with your bosses. I really don't think it's very fair that they'd approve your leave so far in advance only to take it back - I know that work is important, but so is spending time with family, especially if you don't see them often.
  • I hope you won't have to cancel your trip! It would suck to have to work remotely but at least that way you'd still get to see your families for the holidays.
