mamas -- market research to help me with my business

As of today I am a certified Master Signing Time instructor.  Yay!  This means I can sell product directly or through an online store that they set up and teach classes.  I'm curious to get input on types of classes that other mamas would think are good ideas.  If you don't mind, can you tell me what price point you would consider the different options at?  Or let me know if you have other activity ideas!  Thanks so much :-)

  • I must have pregnancy brain because I don't understand what you mean.  Embarrassed

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • The classes that I'm starting with are mommy & me signing classes using the Signing Time curriculum and products, songs, etc.  (www.signingtime.com).  Instead of teaching modified signs like Baby Signs, ST teaches ASL, so it is actually a way to begin a second language for families who wish to take it to that level.  Workshops and intro sessions can be parent and me as well.

We can teach in any scenario we can think of, so instead of formal classes I could do a story time where we learn key words for the story, art projects teaching related signs, field trips to the zoo to practice animal signs, etc.  I would eventually add signing classes for older kids who are interested in signing, teach in schools, etc.   I'm just curious what types of classes people are interested in.  I'm leaning towards the 8 week course and deciding if I want to include the products in a package cost or sell them separately, but that's just based on what I think people would be most interested in.  I could be completely wrong, which was why I thought I'd ask around since I'll be making my proposals to the rec department, etc. soon.

  • I think I'd attend pretty much any of them.  The shorter classes usually work better for us and Sarah...both time wise and "semester".  She gets bored.  I like the idea of learning ASL and not just "baby signs".  How old is too old to start learning them though?

  • Lori -- thanks for the input!  I want to jump in head first and just run with it, but I need to pace myself for my start up and all the info I can gather helps!

I don't think any age is too late to start learning signs.  It's something a lot of kids enjoy and I know of preschools and even kinder/1st classes that will teach some signs.  I remember teaching my friends in junior high because they wanted to learn some basic stuff and fingerspelling.  The original program was targeted at older (preschool-ish) kids then they added the Baby Signing Time series.  It's no different than teaching them a second language like Spanish, etc.  I'm still teaching Aerowyn new signs every day and they really do help me to understand her those times that I just can't figure out what she's saying to me.  I can ask her to show me.  As she gets older and her speech is clearer, we will still continue signing as I would like for her to pick it up as a second language.  We're even attending a playgroup with kids that sign, all ages, some mamas are deaf, some are interpreters, etc.

  • I can't say yes or no to any of those without knowing cost. If a 45 minute session is $50 I might do it. If it's $100 I wouldn't.

So I may be interested in one or all of those things....but not knowing their cost I cannot answer your poll.
