What brand do you have? What do you like/dislike about it? DH has wanted one for a while so I'm thinking of getting him one for Christmas but I don't even know where to start. Thanks
Re: Anyone have a GPS?
Garmin Nuvi 250W GPS
I love it- it has a battery so it doesn't have to be plugged in all the time which our old one didn't have.
We have a Garmin Nuvi from like 3 years ago. It is pretty good overall but there are a few things I dislike about it:
Only one option for the voice. DH hates the voice they have so we always have to keep it on mute.
Searching for nearby services is hit or miss. This was true even when it was new. We have driven to phantom gas stations a lot.
When you type in an address, it has you do state, then city, then number, then street name. Drives me crazy for some reason. I wish you could type in the street name first then have it give you a range of available numbers on that street in that town. I've seen that on other brands and I prefer it that way.
Other than these gripes I find it easy to use and really like having it. I don't use it all the time but it's awesome for when we are out house hunting and need to get from A to B in an unfamiliar town. Much better than pulling out a map book.
ETA: My parents do have an older one (bought maybe around the same time as yours) and they generally like it, but I have noticed that theirs does have less options than our newer model.
You have more than one voice? I'm super jealous. Maybe it's time for an upgrade. We do have two cars, after all...
Ours has three voices, two females, one with an American accent, the other with a British accent, and a male voice...
DH loves the British lady LOL
Ditto! Ours is set to the British voice- and we don't have any of the other problems either- You do have the option of buying a cable to plug into the computer and upgrade the maps/ directory
My whole family (parents, brother, FSIL and I) all have Tom-Toms. DH has gps built in his car, it's the only reason he doesn't have one as well.
The only complaint I have (and I think this is kind of across the board with handheld GPSs) is that it's hard to look up a specific point of interest (by name). For example, you can look up supermarket, but not Shaw's.
You can also change the icon that represents your car on the map. Ours is a pirate ship.
There are actually a bunch of other feature upgrades, too, aside from resolving the problem you mentioned. One that we use all the time is the "Home" button. You set it to your home address, so that wherever you are you can hit the button and it directs you home. It's kind of cute that when you arrive it says "Arriving at home."
We also set it to say the street names, which I know that some previous models didn't have as an option. That helps a LOT.
