Sick niece was exposed to H1N1 at the hospital :(

Niece is in the hospital AGAIN because of her asthma :(  As anyone whow is familliar with asthma knows, coughing is a big part of an attack/the symptoms.

My SIL took her in this morning, said told them she has severe asthma, told them how many treatments she'd had at home etc.  They insisted she sit in a quarantine room with the suspected H1N1 cases because of her cough.  SIL begged them to triage her on the spot - take her temp, take her O2 etc and they would see, she has no signs of H1N1 - they refused.  She begged them to check her file, to see that she was just released from the hospital 2 weeks ago, that she's been hospitalized 4 times in 2009 because she has SEVERE asthma.  Nope.  They refused to triage her until she sat and waited in the quarantine room.

She was in there for 30 minutes and by the time they called her name, her O2 was at 86%  :(  Poor peanut.  And now that poor little 7 year old who has had RSV twice, has had pnemonia 1-2 time a year since she was 2 and is constantly hospitalized for asthma has been exposed to H1N1 courtesy of the hospital.

Her lungs are not strong enough to handle H1N1 and it would be very very serious if she got it.  I'm so frustrated right now.

  • I'm sorry Amy. I will be thinking about your niece. I can't believe the hospital would do that to her. That is horrible. Urg sometimes hospitals make so angry.

  • wow that is really bad. I think if I was the Mom in that case I would have walked out of the hospital and called 9-1-1 to get her on oxygen in the ambulance. I feel so bad for her and I really hope she doesn't catch it. I will be thinking about her!!
  • That's awful! Hope the exposure ends up being harmless -- but she should never have been compromised like that.

  • That is ridiculous! I would have left and gone to another hospital (if that was an option).
  • That is just awful!  I really hope that she doesn't get it.  You would think that they could at least check her file like her mom asked, so they don't expose someone who is high risk to the virus.

  • That's terrible....poor thing. I hope that her mother files a complaint! I sure hope she's doing better today. Did they admit her?

Yeah, she's been admitted and things have gotten worse.  After being on 50% oxygen and multiple treatments, they took her o2 mask off for 2 minutes to fit her with a new one.  Her o2 sats plummeted to 84%, her eyes rolled back in her head and she started to lose consciousness - after only TWO minutes.

She's now on IV steriods and today her right lung is completely congested.  Yesterday it was clear.  So now they're starting other testing as well to see if it's RSV or penemonia again.

I hate not being able to go see her and now D won't be going either, since both her and SIL were exposed to H1N1.  :(

I feel so badly for her. It's so sad when little ones are sick, especially when it's as serious as what she's going through. My nephew had RSV as an infant, it was a very serious, very scary situation. It's a shame that you guys can't see her/them, but I'm sure they know you're praying for her.

Ugh, this whole situation just makes me so angry! Children should not have to suffer because of the idiocy of the medical community! I'll be sending good vibes their way!

  • Oh gosh Amy, what awful news. Your poor neice, and SIL

I can't believe they ignored her like that and were so careless with a high risk patient. They should definitely file a formal complaint with the hospital after this is all over.

Keep us posted on how she's doing okay? Sorry you can't go visit her....
