Is anyone NOT getting H1N1 vaccine?

Please tell me I'm not the only one that has a baby or that is PG and isn't planning on getting the vaccination. . .

Re: Is anyone NOT getting H1N1 vaccine?

  • I would get it for myself, but its not available here. I don't think I'm getting to for DS, although now that he's been diagnosed with asthma, I am rethinking that...
  • not pregnant, do not have a baby and am not getting the vaccine-my dr is opposed to it-feels it is too risky
  • I don't really think I need the H1N1 vaccine.  I'm generally pretty healthy and don't fall in any of the risk categories.  I normally don't get the seasonal flu vaccine either.
  • I am not pg or have a baby, but I am not getting it.  But I am not in a high risk group.

If I was pg, I still probably wouldn't get it, but maybe it I had a baby at home.  I guess you don't really know until you are in the situation.

But I am compulsively washing hands & getting lots of vitamins & probiotics - I feel that if I am not getting the vaccine, I have to do everything else in my power to keep me healthy.

  • I'm not, but I've never had a flu shot in my life.  So that's pretty much par for the course, for me.

I'm not PG, though.  If I were, and my doctor specifically recommended the shot, that's probably the only reason I would get one.  Even then, if I couldn't get it due to limited availability, I don't think I'd be too worried about missing it.

  • I couldn't get one if I wanted to....my county got a few hundred, which were dispensed in one day, then we haven't seen any since.

  • Nope, not getting it.  I think the media hype is OUT.OF.CONTROL.  I've never had a flu shot and don't plan on getting one (ever) unless a medical professional makes me.  I am, however, taking 250% of the RDA of Vitamin D and being more diligent about washing hands and touching my face.
  • I'm not getting it either.  I don't even get the flu vaccine so I'm approaching this the same way.  All I can do is just keep washing my hands and sanitizing, taking my vitamins etc...

I don't know too much about it and it's still so new (and I'm not PG or have a baby) that I don't feel the need to get one at this time in my life.

  • Don't feel bad for not getting it, Lori.  It's a hard decision.  But since you're pretty much a SAHM mom right now, I don't think it's a big deal for you at all.

I had a really hard time deciding and if I wasn't PG, I'm sure I wouldn't get it.  I don't recall ever getting a flu shot before in my life and I very rarely get sick.  (Even the years when I was a flight attendant and probably exposed to all kinds of nasty germs in an enclosed space.)  The last time was in '98 and before that '91.  But when I get sick I get REALLY sick - 103-105 fever, out of commission for 1-2 weeks.  My doc recommended both shots because she said if you do get sick it'll be way less severe than if you don't get the shots.  Plus, baby will get passive immunity.  I read that babies of moms who get the flu shot while PG get sick way less often in the first 6 months of life.

  • I am in a risk group and NOT getting it. I work as a nurse (risk #1) and have already been exposed to it. Bella's pediatrician said that she doesn't feel that it's been tested enough on nursing moms and before she said that I didn't want to get it. People are quick to vaccinate and there is WAY TOO MUCH media hype about it. Yes there are people dying but people die from the regular flu. Friends of mine think I should get it since I'm a nurse and Bella was a preemie but what if it's not safe??? Again back to being tested on nursing moms... I'm not willing to risk it. We'll all wash our hands, not touch our faces, use purel, have visitors wash hands before touching Bella and I'll continue to breastfeed so she can get all the immunity that I can pass on.

  • I'm not getting it either Lori. I am being super cautious right now. Washing my hands all the time, making sure I disinfect anything that other people have touched (like shopping carts) before I use them, taking vitamins, and drinking a lot of water. I just want there to be more research before taking it. MH is a firefighter and was offered the vaccine but declined initially. He's been giving it more thought, but is still on the fence about it.
  • I guess I won't be getting it - but that's only because I have H1N1 right now.
  • I'm not getting it either. The military makes it mandatory for us to get the flu mist - which - did. But they haven't said anything about offering the H1N1 vaccine. I'm not too worried about it - although maybe I should be.
