I know I need to respond to your last email, but I've not been around,.,friend in town for the last week and now Ashton is so sick...which is what I wanted to ask you since you are a nurse.
I took him to the Dr. on Tuesday because he had a cough and was a little congested during the night and I could hear the mucus in his nose. Dr. said since no fever, it was just a cold.
Fast forward to last night, he was up every hour or so, is not eating like normal, is poop is super mucosy, he's fussy and he sounds terrible when he coughs and sneezes. Do you think I should call his Dr. again? I hate to be "that mom" but it makes me super nervous that he is not breathing properly. Even when he does eat all I can hear is snot when he breathes. I've done the suction and saline drops, but it doesn't seem to help him
Thanks!
Re: Sarah -- Mrs.ZIZ
Thank you!! I think I needed to hear that. I think I may need to change Doctors because Ashton's looked at me like I was crazy when I took him in on Tuesday...he gave me that look if you know what I mean. I will be calling first thing tomorrow morning..oh and tomorrow is my first day back to work which makes this so much hard. MH will be dealing with the non-bottle taking baby which is sick on top of everything.
I agree with HH. I don't think you were around last summer (08) when I posted this story, but when Marino was 6 weeks old I took him to the ER b/c he was grunting with every breath. That was his only symptom...no fever, no other issues. But I knew something was wrong. The ER doc rolled his eyes, said things like "oh, is this your first baby? Newborns do things like this" and attempted to discharge us. I called my pedi crying b/c I knew Marino was sick and she demanded a second opinion from a neonatologist, who took one look at him and admitted us. It turned out he had late onset Group B strep which had progressed to sepsis (and later bacterial meningitis). Within an hour of being admitted, he fell unconscious for close to 3 days. What would have happened if we went home?
I'm certain Ashton doesn't have anything like that, but at the end of the day, who cares if the doctor thinks you're a hysterical mom? The most important thing is having a healthy baby and you don't need to feel bad/guilty/stupid for demanding your child get the care he needs. Go with your instincts.
How is his breathing? If he has any labored breathing/chest retractions (his chest caves in with each breath, you can see the little dimple in his clavicle), you should go to the ER.
Don't worry about not responding to my last msg! No big deal!!
Bella sometimes has really mucousy poop. I would be more concerned with his fussiness, coughing and sneezing. Babies are primary nose breathers until about 4 months and then the breath more equally with their nose and mouth. Bella was really congested for a few days a few weeks ago. Suctioning did nothing! I did try to suction her before each time I'd breastfeed and that seemed to make her feed better. Sneezing is Ashton's way to try to clear the mucus on his own, so I had the best luck suctioning bella after she'd sneeze.
Don't worry about being THAT mom!! He is YOUR kid!! You are the one who knows your child and cares for him! Who cares what the dr thinks! If need be change drs! Our dr knows I'm a nurse but I've asked her not to treat me like one because it's so different when the sick kid is MY kid! She agreed. I really like her a lot. It's important to like your dr and feel confident that they care about your child and you.
Hopefully he's doing better today. I'm hoping that he took a bottle too
Bella sometimes won't feed well at daycare and will breastfeed frequently at night. That's why we still co-sleep after her first long sleep. Ryan's had luck feeding Bella the bottle while she's in the bouncer on vibrate. Keep us posted!!
Hope Ashton is feeling better soon, Renee!
Ditto what Sarah said about him taking the bottle if he's hungry enough. My DD initially took the bottle without any problem. I got lazy and didn't offer it daily and one day she rejected it. I tried for 2 months to get her to take it, but she refused. I was very stressed out because I had to go back to work and I was afraid that her crying would be too much for the DCP. Well, the first few days she only drank 2 oz total all day, but eventually she realized that if she didn't take the bottle, she'd be very hungry. I'm happy to say that she now drinks all 4 bottles I send.
