First, thanks to Pam for updating my status! And thanks to all for the congratulations!
Yes, just like his brother, Simon decided when he was ready to be born, and it had nothing to do with us being ready. My c-section was scheduled for November 17, so he came 12 days early. Needless to say, we felt just as unprepared! When I started having signs of labour, I gave my husband warning and he looked a bit like a deer in the headlights. I had a talk with my belly, and told me that if I was not in fact in labour he wanted me to rest rest rest until the 17th and would even bring me breakfast in bed - well, there was no convincing the baby of any of that!
I wish I hadn't laboured. Since I knew I'd be having a cesarian anyway, I was looking forward to not having contractions. I'm not sure if they hurt more this time, or if I was just not mentally ready and thus didn't handle them as well, but I found it a whole lot more painful. I was soooo glad to finally get the spinal!
Simon's a big and healthy baby - 4220g (or 9lbs 5oz) and 52.5 cm long. (Jakob was 3550g and 53.5 cm, and born about a week and a half earlier in terms of gestational age.) He lost only about 3% of his body weight and has already almost regained it all. I'm a milker once again, but he's been so hungry that we've been supplementing with formula. He's a good sleeper, though, maybe especially because he's got a happy and full belly!
There was some meconium in the fluid when he was born, and he was grunting too which indicated fluid/mucous in his lungs, so he was taken to the special care nursery (part of NICU) from the OR. I didn't get to really 'meet' him until he was about 3 hours old, and he was 7 hours before I finally held him. That was tough.
I'm doing alright, though very sore. Between having a big baby (which I guess at least partly explains why this pg was so much more difficult) and labouring before the cesarian, I'm very sore. I'll be going home tomorrow. I'm missing Jakob and will sleep better at home, but here I'm better able to rest (if that makes any sense?).
Re: Another baby in a rush!
Congratulations!!
(I don't understand how everyone else makes such big babies- Ethan was almost two weeks late and only 7 pounds! What gives?)
I'm sorry you didn't get to meet him right away- I know that was hard for me, as well, and I only had to wait an hour. I'm glad he's doing well, though- I saw your pics on FB and I was worried about the IV and nasal tube I saw on little Simon. He's a cutie, by the way
Happy healing! Take it easy for the next few weeks...
Congratulations Melanie!!! I'm glad you're resting at the hospital but happy to hear you will be home in your own bed soon. Are your parents still in town to help with this? Hopefully they are - I'm sure they were excited to hang about BC to meet your new little one.
That's awful you couldn't hold him for 7 hours (and not even see him for 3!) I don't think I would have handled that well after the 9 months of waiting...
glad to hear you are both doing well though. I hope you have a speedy recovery!
