Anyone have a GPS?

What brand do you have? What do you like/dislike about it? DH has wanted one for a while so I'm thinking of getting him one for Christmas but I don't even know where to start. Thanks :)

Re: Anyone have a GPS?

  • Garmin Nuvi 250W GPS

I love it- it has a battery so it doesn't have to be plugged in all the time which our old one didn't have.

  • I have a Tom Tom and love it!

  • We have a Tom Tom and LOVE it!  My husband got it with points from work so we didn't pay for it, but we looked at the model at Best Buy and it was $149...  It doesn't have features that more expensive ones have, like traffic but does have some that others don't like Walking Mode but it works great and like PP, it has a battery so you can use it without it being plugged in.

  • We love our Garmin Nuvi.  I'm not sure of the model number, but that line seems to be consistently good.
  • We have a Garmin Nuvi from like 3 years ago.  It is pretty good overall but there are a few things I dislike about it:

Only one option for the voice.  DH hates the voice they have so we always have to keep it on mute.

Searching for nearby services is hit or miss.  This was true even when it was new.  We have driven to phantom gas stations a lot.

When you type in an address, it has you do state, then city, then number, then street name.  Drives me crazy for some reason.  I wish you could type in the street name first then have it give you a range of available numbers on that street in that town.  I've seen that on other brands and I prefer it that way.

Other than these gripes I find it easy to use and really like having it.  I don't use it all the time but it's awesome for when we are out house hunting and need to get from A to B in an unfamiliar town.  Much better than pulling out a map book.

We got ours last year and it doesn't seem to have any of these issues.  So hopefully they took care of all that.

ETA:  My parents do have an older one (bought maybe around the same time as yours) and they generally like it, but I have noticed that theirs does have less options than our newer model.

You have more than one voice?  I'm super jealous.  Maybe it's time for an upgrade.  We do have two cars, after all... Smile

  • Ours has three voices, two females, one with an American accent, the other with a British accent, and a male voice...

DH loves the British lady LOL

Ditto! Ours is set to the British voice- and we don't have any of the other problems either- You do have the option of buying a cable to plug into the computer and upgrade the maps/ directory

  • My whole family (parents, brother, FSIL and I) all have Tom-Toms. DH has gps built in his car, it's the only reason he doesn't have one as well.

The only complaint I have (and I think this is kind of across the board with handheld GPSs) is that it's hard to look up a specific point of interest (by name). For example, you can look up supermarket, but not Shaw's.

Yes.  DH insists on keeping it set to the male British voice, and we call 'him' Nigel.  At first I thought that we were only one of a few,  but I've found that most people I know have a human name for their GPS!

You can also change the icon that represents your car on the map.  Ours is a pirate ship. :)

There are actually a bunch of other feature upgrades, too, aside from resolving the problem you mentioned.  One that we use all the time is the "Home" button.  You set it to your home address, so that wherever you are you can hit the button and it directs you home.  It's kind of cute that when you arrive it says "Arriving at home."

We also set it to say the street names, which I know that some previous models didn't have as an option.  That helps a LOT.

  • We have a Garmin Nuvi... low end, just tells us to turn right or left, doesnt give us the street names
  • We also have a newer edition Garmin Nuvi and really like it.  I don't know how gung-ho you are about Black Friday shopping, but I know they do some great deals the day after Thanksgiving, so I'd definitely check those out.

  • We have a Garmin Nuvi, my mom got one the year before us and we loved hers so we got the same one. It works great and has voice options. We love Australian Karen.
  • We have a TomTom and love it. I think the directions are really clear. Sometimes I have to fight with it to look things up, but it ends up having what I'm looking for. My one complaint would be the suction device it came with to mount on the windshild- ours never stuck. I was a big fan of the device that came with a Garmin I had in a rental car once. Anyway, ours ended up cracking when it fell one too many times, so I went to Radio Shack and got a universal mount that just sits on the dash and I'm much happier.
