Hello Everyone,
My name is Brandalynn and I just got married Oct. 18th so I've been bumped to the nest!! I've posted maybe one post on here so I'll say Hi again. My husband and I bought our first house almost two years ago! Being a homeowner has been interesting (especially our first thanksgiving in the house when the plumbing decided to break) but now we are pretty settled and looking forward to our first married holiday season.
I do have a quick question for you guys.
I'm in the process of trying to legally change my last name and I was wondering the process. I'm thinking it's social security office first but I'm not sure what I need to take there. I've tried calling the office but I always get hung up on because they don't put you on hold for more than 2 minutes. Any help would be appreciated!!!
Thanks a bunch!!
Re: New to the Nest, Plus a quick Question...
congrats on your wedding and welcome to the Nest!
When I did this (4 years ago) the social security office had me go to the Driver's License Center first. they wouldn't update my SSID card w/o the new driver's license. And I only needed my official wedding certificate to do that.
Good luck! It's such a hassle. I have things I still haven't changed my name on...
Hi & welcome! Congrats on your wedding
Here's the link for the application to apply for a new SS card. I had this filled out before I went to help cut down on the time. Also, I went and applied for my new SS card first, then went to the driver's license center and had my name changed there. In the link below, it tells you the documents that you need to have present with you. GL! I HATED the process! I just renewed my car registration but left my maiden name because the state wants an additional $22.50 just to change your name!

Hi Brandy,
I am a newbie to the nest as well (married Oct 11th). I just did all the name change stuff two weeks ago. DMV first, then SS. I needed my new and old license for SS. I just mailed my passport away on Friday for that all you need is legal proof of the name change and your current passport, but you have to send an original marriage certificate away.
Hope this helps!
Jenn
omg, i'm having a brain lapse, the other girls are right, you go to the driver's license ctr first, then to the ss office! i'll blame it on being Monday, haha
Thanks a bunch guys!!!
This process is frustrating. Do you guys know if PennDot charges for the name change??
I went to SS first. Then I waited till I got the new card to go to MV, about a week. They gave me a paper that would allow me to go there earlier, but I figured it would be easier to just wait.
Congrats and welcome!
Lisa Beth
I also went to SS first and had no problems.
Thanks for the warm welcome!!
Also PP - Jack & Bella are fantastic names...and your babies are adorable!!
i had to go the SS office first, too. maybe it depends on the county, i'm in Adams.
oh, congrats and welcome!
I did the same think Lisa Beth did; SS first, waited to recieve my new card then went to the DMV.
As to whether or not PennDOT will charge you ... If you just get an adendum (piece of paper) with your new name on it, no they will not charge. If you get a new photo license, you will have to pay.
I went with the adendum living near State College, because I didn't want the hassle of having my license labled a duplicate and trying to go out (when I used to go out, that is) but there are pros and cons to both. I think if you fly alot, you'll want the new card.
hey blynnie! welcome
i went to the SS office first, its downtown harrisburg by the forum. youll need your old SS card, marriage license, and your drivers license (old name is fine). they will give you a paper that says you have changed your name but you wont get your new card in the mail for a week or two.
you can then take the paper from the SS office (you dont need to wait for the new card) and your marriage license to the DMV. i went to the one in harrisburg by shipoke. if you are just getting an update card, its no charge. i think its $12 if you want a new card with your new name. you can also change the registration on your car for no fee and they will give you a new registration card. if you want your title changed, theres a fee. i didnt do this. i also only got the update card but i have decided to get a new license because mine doesnt expire until 2012 and its a pain to show people the card with the picture AND the update card. sometimes they give you the side eye which makes me nervous esp for flying.
i needed to wait for my new SS card to change my name at work for insurance, tax purposes, etc. i didnt need my SS card for anything else.
the biggest headache so far was changing it with the bank.
good luck!
