Vent about my office....

My office is in a suite with other professors and receptionists/admin assistants.  I need *quiet* in order to concentrate, and I hate being in a suite because there is always a group of people outside my door chatting away and I can't think straight.

But, my BIGGEST pet peeve is the prof. two doors down from my office (in the suite) who insists on making all of his phone calls on speaker phone.  So, not only can I hear his end of any conversation he is making, but I can hear the other person as well.  I hear his convos with his kids.  I hear his convos with collegeues in China and Brazil.  And now I am listening to his convo with the tech guy about his voicemail not working.

Seriously?? Pick up the receiver and talk into it!!  Why is that so hard!?

When I have to make a phone call I even close my office door so that no one else is bothered! Argh!

  • Ugh, I HATE when people overuse speakerphone.  If you're having a conference call where you're trying to work on your computer or something while talking, then fine, but to talk to your kids?!  WTF!

  • So annoying! I can't *stand* using/hearing speakerphone!! Does anyone else feel the same way, or has anyone else tried to tell him to shut it? ;)
  • the other prof that is in between us is NEVER in his office, so I am sure he doesn't care. everyone else is probably too far away to be bothered, so it's just me. And I'm the new guy, so I ain't saying anything to a tenured faculty member!! (who was also my professor at one point, which makes things doubly weird).

  • My boss does that! and he sits literally about 2-3 feet away from me, and then he shushes me when I'm on the phone.  People are so annoying.

  • See if you can order him a headset preferably bluetooth. Maybe he has neck or shoulder issues. I understand your pain though. He should be more of a team player.
  • I feel your pain. My boss has a tendency to do that as well, but thankfully I can just get up and leave the office if need be. lol

  • That is definitely annoying.  When I worked in an office, the guy across the hall was the master of the speaker phone.  All day long.  Yeah, I am thinking he made up his billable hours because he seriously was on the phone more than he wasn't.  I heard everything.  One day I asked him a question about a very private conversation he had had earlier that day.  Something along the lines of "How's that hangover?"  The speaker phone ended there.
