BFP with #2 today and have a dilemma...

Hi ladies,

Keeping in sync with nestie tradition ( I posted a BFP with Kai), I am posting to let you all know I got a BFP with DC #2 today. :)  YEAH!! Super happy.  We havent told our friends and will not for awhile, so if you see me on Facebook please dont post anything. That will make DC #2 and Kai 2 1/2 years apart. Yes, I am CRAZY. :) I SO knew before the test that I was PG. My damn boobs look like sausage patties (tmi-I know). lol  Guess the old boobies know what they are supposed to do. Hopefully I am not one of those that leaks much sooner with # 2. ack!

So here is my dilemma.  Kai was recently diagnosed with being IgA deficient in his blood. They are also testing for celiac disease (allergy to gluten).  From what I understand IgA deficiency is the most common and it is basically that his body doesnt produce antibodies in his nose, throat, and ears to fit off infection/viruses like a normal person.  So he is more susceptible to sinus, ear, throat infections.

We are scheduled to go to Maui in exactly 1 month. I got a super great deal $580 for two RT tickets and 1 week rental car. Hotel is separate. I don't think I will ever see that deal again!  I bought cancel for whatever reason insurance (80% refund), because we were trying to conceive #2 and I got sick with Kai so badly (knock on wood haven't YET) and Kai's condition.

So my dilemma is do you think we should go to Maui?? It will probably be the last time in a long time that would could go, but...  I have been hesitant since we found out about Kai and because knowing he can get colds more easily and it is flu/h1n1 season, etc. You know all those people on a plane...germs. Do you think we should cancel our trip? Maybe I am being a freak, but he stays home with me and he has already been sick with a cold 3 times in 4 weeks. Granted, I have too.

Have the same dilemma with going with DH to Washington DC in January.  I just dotn know what to do. Any advice on what YOU would do? Am I being paranoid?

BTW- None of us have gotten the flu or H1N1 shot.  I am still undecided on it.  If I were to get one, it would be the flu one ( I think), but it is still too late to get it before Maui because he needs two. Also the Drs dont even have it.

Re: BFP with #2 today and have a dilemma...

  • Congrats on BFP #2!!

Sorry, I have no advice on the travel part...  I don't know enough about children but just wanted to congratulate you!  Smile

  • Congratulations!

I'm sorry for what you're dealing with with Kai. That must be tough. BTW, both I and trieuIam have celiac disease, so we can help if you have questions or need help with that.

Is there anyone who could watch Kai for you so you can go on your own?

What is the prognosis if he does fall ill with a virus?

I am super conservative when it comes to my son's health. We quarantined him for the first 4.5 months of his life after he had a serious illness, and I basically didn't allow many visitors or take him unneccessary places until flu season ended last year. I was planning to be more calm this year, but he was diagnosed with asthma (virus triggered) and had pneumonia (needing a 2 day hospitilization for respiratory distress) after his first tiny cold of the season. Now we will probably be vigilant about keeping him away from germs again this flu season. All that is background to say I probably wouldn't take him, but I would try to go with DH, if that was a possibility.

  • thanks SBM!  I will definitely call on you if he has celiac. Do you have IgA deficiency to? I ask because I guess that is common with celiac.

I didnt take Kai on airplanes until he was about 7-8 months old.  We would do trips by car to Lake Tahoe (have a vacation rental up there) to avoid traveling around others when he was little.

I do have my parents/siblings around to watch him, BUT he has become such a momma's boy.  He cries and cries if I am not around him.  I think it must be a phase or the fact that I am always around.  We recently tried to have him do a sleepover at my parents house (whom he sees everyday since his birth) and he cried so hard at night that I had to go get him. I honestly dont think he would do good without me (he would do fine without DH though-lol).

  • wow, congrats!!! that is so exciting :)

as far as traveling goes I would talk to your pedi about it but would consider it (probably not so much the DC trip but more the hawaii trip just b/c it's your last chance to really get away)....when will you find out more info about Kai's diagnosis? even if he does have celiac disease, I am sure you could make any necessary adjustments by then... you could still get him vaccinated for h1n1 w/the 1st shot and then get the 2nd one when you are in Hawaii?? he will already have some immunity after the 1st one... even if you decide not to go w/him I would recommend getting both the regular flu shot and the h1n1 b/c you are taking care of him and if you get sick, he will likely get it from you...the fact that he is IgA deficient makes him even higher risk than most young children, all the more reason for you both to get vaccinated IMO... this is a really good link with more info about the vaccine, esp the link on that page about vaccine safety if that is what you have concerns about

I just asked DH about traveling on a plane with DD when she is just over a month old and won't be fully vaccinated b/c I have similar concerns and he said that it would be fine (he's a pediatrics resident FWIW) ...BUT if Kai is IgA deficient then that puts him at higher risk so that's why I'd recommend checking w/your pedi b/c they may say that the deficiency puts him at too much risk to travel w/o the vaccine.

GL with your decision and CONGRATS again!! :)

  • OMG, congrats Amy, it's very exciting news about your BFP!!

I agree w/Jaime and would call your pedi for definite advice about taking Kai to Maui.

But I wanted to give you my suggestion for the plane ride...DH had seen a TV news report about traveling on planes especially during this H1N1 epidemic and the most common way to get germs passed on is actually the seat and surrounding area that an infected person may have also touched.  So bring some Wet Ones Antibacterial Wipes on the plane and wipe down everything that you think Kai will come into contact with (seat, window, window shade, tray, back of seat in front of you, etc).  I would also wipe his hands w/the Wet Ones (can you tell I puffy heart Wet Ones?!) regularly on the flight.

As a side note, I carry Wet Ones with me at all times and wipe down anything that Sean Patrick may touch (namely in restaurants: tables, menus, etc...we bring our own portable high-chair, I never use the one provided by the restaurant) in an effect to protect him from germs.  I'm completely OCD about it.

When we fly to Hawaii for the holidays, our plan is to have Dan board first with Sean Patrick's car seat.  He'll wipe everything down and install the car seat before we get on the plane.

Good luck and keep us posted!  xo

  • CONGRATULATIONS!!

No advice for you, but I second pp for sure-- talk to your pedi about travelling. :)

    How exciting!

  • Congrats on your BFP!

I agree with wiping stuff down, and use a lot of hand sanitizer.  With kids, it's hard since they touch stuff and then they touch their eyes, nose and mouth without you washing their hands, and that's how they get sick.

  • Congrats Amy!!  I wonder if you're just super careful, carrying sanitizer and using it every time you touch hand rails or doorknobs?  Washing your hands every chance you get. Maybe get one of those face masks for Kai just for the plane ride, it might look funny but who cares.  I think it would be a shame to miss out because something "might" happen.  Maybe your dr. could give you an idea on the  possibility of him getting something?

On another note...I fly into Maui on Thanksgiving day and am there through Dec 8th, any chance you'll be there by then?  I'm trying to get in touch w/ Evonne & Amber to do a GTG (and any other nesties availible).  Let me know :)

We fly in on the 9th :( and are there for a week.

    Thanks ladies! Good ideas.

Nicole, did you get Sean the shots (one or both)? how did he do?

  • SP got the first half of the seasonal flu vaccine last month, he gets part 2 next week.  I'm hoping that my pedi's office gets the H1N1 vaccine by then.

SP did really well with the first round of the seasonal flu vaccine.  He actually got 4 shots total at that appointment (it was his 12 month check-up) and he had no reaction whatsoever...he wasn't even drowsy like he's been after the previous immunizations.  He cried for a minute when the shots were administered and that's it although I think I have the most mellow, go-with-the-flow kid ever...makes me nervous about having another because we're due some baby drama :)

  • Jaime-good to hear that your hubby thinks it's ok for LO to fly. I had no idea he was a peds res. That makes me feel so much better about taking Matty to Oahu in Dec. And I totally agree with MrsNFB, lots of anti-bac wipes and hand sanitizer. If someone near you seems to be sick-coughing/sneezing too much for your liking- ask the flight attendants about a possible seat change. They should be more than happy to assist you if there are any open seats. Hope you get to go and have a great time!
  • Silly me--- CONGRATS by the way! Happy and healthy 9 months!
  • Wooohooo!!  #2!  Congratulations Amy!  Smile

I don't have any advice to add about traveling but like the other ladies have said, I'd definitely ask Kai's doctor for his opinion.

  • Congratulations!  So exciting!!  The PP had some good advice. I would start with my pedi for sure though.

     Good luck!

  • Kai has an appt tomorrow re: his IgA deficiency. I asked if they had the h1n1 shot and they do just in case I decided to get him it ( I am now leaning more towards it).  Funny that my regular Dr doesnt have the h1n1 shots OR the regular flu shots anymore. My OBs office doesnt either.  Its crazy that they tell us to get it if we are in a high risk group and then it isnt even available.

  • congrats so exciting number 2 on the way!!!  no advice about travelling-definitely check in with the pediatrician-my guess is being careful taking wipes, etc....will be a start though
  • Big congrats on your BFP Amy! Woo hoo! We're hoping to concieve #2 when #1 is about 18 months. May I ask how long you were TTC #2?

As for the travel issue...given Kai's diagnosis I wouldn't risk it. The fact that he stays home with you (and basically has limited exposure) and has been ill just solidifies that for me. Imagine all of the yuck he'd be exposed to in-flight. Even with wiping things down with anti-bac wipes (which I do when I fly too...you know they don't clean the seats that well). People today are just not concientious enough to not travel when they're ill, thus exposing everyone else to their illnesses. Maybe getting him to stay with grandma and grandpa is a better approach? You could certainly work on that and not worry too much about exposing him to illness.

Until you can boost his immunity, etc. I would just plan on not traveling by public transportation anytime soon.  Can you even imagine getting to Maui and he's got an ear infection or worse.  Not fun at all.

  • Congrats on #2!

I totally agree with MrsPresley, and definitely discuss your options with your pedi.

We had booked flights to Mexico in April when the whole H1N1 first broke out and I was a nervous wreck just trying to decide whether or not to take my DD with us (she was 10 months old). The tickets were very expensive and the purpose of our trip was to visit my ill Grandma that DD had never met. We ended up taking her, but were a lot more vigilant in keeping her clean, constantly wiping things down, spraying everything with lysol, washing her hands, and thankfully we stayed with family so we didn't eat out at restaurants as much & didn't have to stay at a hotel.....I hope it all works out for you!

  • Congratulation on number two!!!  Sorry I have no advice about travelling, but would definitely check in with the pediatrician.
  • Congrats on the BFP! I went to Maui while 8wks pg in Sept-Oct and I was careful on the plane (had no shots at the time either) and everything was okay. I definitely didn't touch my face or mouth while on the plane and MH and I washed our hands the first thing when we landed in the airport. But I dunno about how risky it is for Kai cuz I don't know much about igA deficiency. Either way, GL and congrats again on #2 on the way =)

  • Hi ladies!  Just a f/u to my dilemma. I took Kai to the Dr today with the intention of finding out more about this IgA deficiency and possibly getting him the h1n1 shot.  The Pedi DID have the shot but the one with the mercury.  He knows how weird I am with Kais shots so he suggested Kai get a flu shot w/o mercury.  So he got that.  Our Pedi (which to my amazement) did NOT push either shot and was not too concerned if (god forbid) Kai were to get it. He said that it was more harder than the normal flu but that it is just that "a flu".  He thinks his IgA deficiency may make him only a little more sick but wasnt completely sure because he didnt even know he was even IgA deficient (the other Dr never sent him the results).  BUT he suggested we go to Maui because the weather is better and might do Kai some good (because he has been getting colds).  He hopes to get more h1n1 shots soon w/o mercury. I was SO SO surprised that he was so for going to Hawaii, especially with ppl on the plane, etc.  He just said to make sure and wash his hands all the time, etc.  So for now, we are off to Maui next month :)

  • Wow, that's great news! Doesn't it make you feel so much better to get some reassurance from a doc! Sounds like you have a good one who actually listens to you instead of just pushing agendas one way or another. I hope you have a great time on your trip. Can't wait to see pix of Kai in paradise!
