BR: Stuffed Up

I am incredibly congested and having the hardest time sleeping these days.  It's gotten so bad that I'm now breathing through my mouth the entire night, waking up intermittently with a painfully dry and scratchy throat, and SNORING!  DH even recorded me on his iPhone after I woke him up last night.  My OB recommended taking Zyrtec, which she said would be safe for pregnant women.

I'm going to try it tonight, but I'm not a fan of taking meds, especially now, so does anyone have any other tips to help me deal with the stuffed nose?  It's hormone-related, so I don't really have any other symptoms, except for the occasional nose bleed.

TIA!

Re: BR: Stuffed Up

  • Sorry to hear your not feeling well. I'm dealing with a cold myself. Must have caught it from the rugrats at the preschool I work at. I got sick a few times while I was PG and was not a fan of meds either. Why don't you try the neti pot? Hope you feel better soon!

  • I just looked up neti pot.  Hadn't heard of it before.

How do you do it?  With an actual pot or out of cupped hands?  And what solution do you use?  It sounds a bit uncomfortable!

Sorry for the many questions, but I just read a little Wikipedia thing on it and it sounds like there are a few options.

  • It looks weird, but isn't actually uncomfortable and can work wonders. Check this demo out. Kind of funny, but helpful. I read that you should use an isotonic saline solution. This just means that the saline concentration is similar to the body's own salt content. There are quite a few solutions out there.

  • Neti pot!

I got it from Target...they should have them at Long's or any drug store.  It's an actual pot and the one I got comes with packets to mix with water to make the saline solution.  You tilt your head to the side and pour the solution into one nostril.  Keep breathing through your mouth.  The solution fills up your sinus and drains out the other nostril.  It feels really weird at first but trust me, it works.  Anyways...let it flow for a minute or so and then blow your nose.  You'll be amazed at all the junk that comes out!  Kinda gross but it feels great when you're done.

  • I've been dealing with allergies, so I'm pretty stuffed up most of the time, too. I haven't tried a neti pot yet, but I have been using a saline nasal spray, which has helped...the neti pot is the next thing on the list!
  • I've have the same exact symptons as you Melissa!!! I haven't tried this yet but I'm going to tonight. Put some vasaline under your nostrils and then a dot of vicks vapor rub under each and that should open your nasel passages. I've been a little hesitant to try it since I tend to break out easily. However, I'm going to give it try since I'm not a Neti fan. My husband uses it and the process looks very uncomfortable.

  • If you decide to use saline, I really like Baby Ayr saline which is what we use when the girls have a cold, but it works really well for us, too.
  • Thanks!  That def sounds like something worth trying. The Zyrtec helped a lot, but I'm still slightly stuffy, so I'll check around and see if I can find me a Neti pot of my own.

  • Hey Melissa, we got John's neti pot at Walmart last year when he got sick.  I know that Kokua Market and Down to Earth also has them so I'm sure that Whole Foods would have it also.  Good luck with the neti pot!

  • I have had the same thing going on for the past month!  I started Zyrtec last monday and finally...relief!  The past two nights I have no been stuffed up and didn't have to mouth-breathe.  I take the Zyrtec in the morning and rinse my sinuses with a neti pot morning and night (before I brush my teeth).  So far, so good!

    Good luck!

I am a fan of the one by SinuCleanse...it's non-breakable and travels well.  I got mine from Walgreen's.  They have refill packets and I get the Walgreen's brand, since they're cheaper.  Love it!

I do this sometimes...and weird as it sounds, Carmex works too. Stick out tongue

  • I highly recommend the neti pot.  Russ uses it all the time because he has sinus issues, and I was hesitant to try it.  But it really helped me to be able to breath through my nose at night time with general pregnancy congestion.  It was also great when I had a cold a few weeks ago.

I also used vicks on my chest which helped with the congestion and coughing.  I avoided putting it under my nose because of break outs.

  • I tried the neti pot but it didn't work for me.  The only thing that gave me mild releif when I was pg was using a saline nasel spray "Ayr" to keep my nasal passaged moist and sucking on a halls menthol drop, but of course you'll want to check w/ your dr. first.

My congestion wasn't allergy related, it was simply being pregnant and having swelling everywhere, including my nasal passages.

Arrived 4.5 weeks early due to PROM
