I'll try to keep this short.
Two weeks ago, stray cat on my porch. Slept there all night. Keeps showing up at the house, even though we never put anything out for it, didn't pet it, nothing.
Find out from the neighbors it "belongs" to a family down the street. Short version is that cat used to be a 100% indoor cat. Got pg because they didn't get any of their 3 cats (1 male) fixed. Owners got upset that she had kittens. Had her spayed and relegated her to be a 100% outdoor cat
A couple of neighbors have been leaving food out, because all appearances are that these people aren't leaving any food or water out for her, much less providing shelter.
Word is they also had kicked out the male cat that got her pg. Someone up the street finally took him in, put up FOUND posters all over the street (they've been up all over our neighborhood for about 3 weeks - can't miss 'em), and they old owners never called.
So this female stray keeps coming back to our house. I finally convinced DH to let me put out food & water, as well as a box with some old clothes in it for when it gets cold. About 50% of the time she sleeps on our front porch, trying to look in the living room window.
DH said we can keep her, as an outdoor cat.

As in, we provide food, water, and outdoor shelter, and vet care.
I would much rather bring her indoors, especially now that I know that she was 100% indoor cat, with a family and other cats, until she got punished for having kittens.
So, assuming I can convince DH to let me bring her indoors, WWYD about the old owners? All evidence is that the essentially just threw her outside and forgot about her. I would rather do nothing, and just assume she was a stray, but should I try to talk to them? Put up posters like the other people did?
WDYT?
Re: WWYD re: stray cat
I say do nothing! They are bad pet parents and if you are willing to give this cat a good home then good for you! I can't stand when people just toss animals out, they can't care for themselves, much like babies so I have no sympathy for the neighbors.
I think it's really great that you are willing to take in the poor cat. My neighbor did the same thing when they put their house up for sale- kicked out their cats (that had alawys been indoor cats)
I have no idea how people would live with themselves knowing their pets were kicked out to die basically. I agree with pp that if it has no collar, its been hanging around your house and there are no signs up saying its missing, it's yours. Kudos to you!!

I say you notify them by leaving the dirty kitty litter on their porch.
Someone in my neighborhood kicked their cat out or moved or something. It was the sweetest cat & didn't have any tags so I took it to the Humane Society up here (a better choice than the county shelter). They scanned the cat, saw that it belonged to the neighbor, and returned it to them-the next day the cat was outside again. I would have taken that cat but I'm allergic to the point of wheezing. After what happened to that cat I would not try to contact the neighbors.
I have friends who care for some of the semi-feral cats in their neighborhood. They fix the cats, get their vaccines, & feed them. They built little boxes for them out of plywood and I think they even put heating pads in there in the winter! They call them their porch cats. But I hope your little kitty gets to live in the house. Maybe you can convince dh to let her inside if you contact a cat rescue and see if they'll adopt her out if you take care of/foster her. If you do that she might become a permanent member of your family!
Don't do anything!
BTW I know it seems horrible at first, but some cats are really happy as outdoor cats as long as you pay them some attention and feed them a bit. We have outdoor cats (we live on a farm road) that we feed everyday, but that is it. We also don't feed them a ton because living in Crittenden near farms and fields, they have plenty of food (mice and other small animals) to eat (which they sometimes grossly display on our front porch!). The first winter, I hated leaving them all out, but they survived easily, just like they did before we lived there, and they are really happy outdoors. We do have shelter for them from the rain/snow, though. I think they'd hate not having the freedom of roaming on several acres if we tried to bring them inside!
I know cats will do fine outdoors, and if I can't convince DH, then that's what we'll do. But I worry in our neighborhood, because several of the people here either (a) let their dogs run loose, or (b) don't keep their dogs contained very well. That's the main reason I never let my other cat outdoors.
Thanks again, and I'll let you know any updates.
BTW - I've decided to name her Tizzy. I don't know why it came to me. I googled it, and found these "Tizzy Blanket Flowers".
Aren't they pretty? It's perfect for her.
Well, think about the fact that I live in the country with coyotes and opossums and foxes and hunting dogs and........
I would do nothing with the former owners. They sound like total idiots.
Promise DH sexual favors if you let her become an indoor cat
.
hahaha. JK. But whatever works . . .
This is exactly how we got our kitty. My IL's neighbors didn't take care of their kitties and the IL's took their 3 cats in, D took Jesse home with him right before we got engaged. I would just take her in and not worry about the neighbors, they obviously don't care about her
