so at my appt on Fri I still hadn't made any progress... my cervix was nice and closed, though soft. my OB does not have much faith that this baby will come out on her own by my due date and we started talking about inductions.
she doesn't want me going beyond 41 weeks so we have the option of inducing on Nov 12th, or we can give her a little bit more time to come on her own and if she doesn't come by the end of next weekend, we could induce on Nov 16th. it would be cool for her to come on her own and have a 11-10-09 birthday but I doubt that is going to be happening!
I am not sure what I want to do. if we induce on the 12th there is a slightly higher chance the
induction would fail or I'd need a c-section if things didn't progress
as they should....yet I am so ready to meet her and be done with all the discomfort that comes with being almost 40 weeks PG. at the same time, I'm pretty sure it's always better if your body goes into labor naturally as opposed to being induced. but if we wait until the 16th, the longer we wait, the bigger she gets and the chances increase ever so slightly that I will need a c-section b/c she won't fit through my pelvic canal. (or the same thing could happen that would happen on the 12th where things just don't progress like they should w/the drugs and I need a c-section anyway)
I go in on Tues for another cervical check but we'll need to decide by Wed if we want to go ahead with the induction on Thurs or not.... I am not sure if a few days will make that big of a difference but I am having a really hard time deciding....
Re: looks like we might be scheduling an induction...
I would have a hard time deciding, too, for exactly the same reasons. I'm really hoping to avoid a c-section and induction definitely increases your chances. But then again, I know someone who was induced in August and had a normal vag delivery. I wonder what the statistics are for failed inductions?
Sending lots of labor dust your way so you hopefully won't have to decide! It's time to give her her eviction notice, Jaime! (Have you been trying all the old wives' tales to induce labor? It can't hurt!)
I have absolutely no advice for you whatsoever (brooke came on her own at 38weeks, 1 day) but I just wanted to wish you luck with whatever you decide!
Did you pick a name yet or are you going to "meet" her first?
Oh and I second pp-- have you tried all the old wives tales? I tried all of them at once (haha) and she came on her own...

I've only tried a few things, with spicy food being the most frequent but that is nothing new, I always eat lots of spicy food
we are still trying to come up with a name!!! we're hoping when we meet her, we will feel inspired

Lisa, I think this is in large part due to the fact that most women have no clue when they conceived and the EDD is a very rough estimate.... I have seen that some doctors won't induce until you are at least 41 wks but I think it's pretty uncommon for them to insist on 42 wks here in the US. in my case, we know exactly how far along I am so that may be part of the reason why my ob isn't reluctant to induce.

This is my thought. I'd hold off.
Good point! I wonder if they still insist on a woman who has had IF treatment waits so long before induction here?
Hey Jamie! I know you're SO uncomfortable, I was miserable those last few weeks and technically was let off the hook since Ella came at 35.5 weeks. But, I wouldn't rush things along, even though I know you're so excited to meet your baby
Maybe set a date for you to decide? Just put it off for a few days and try not to think about it? Either way, your baby will decide or your dr. will decide so there's really no need to put too much pressure on yourself.
Cerclage placed @ 21w6d due to CI (IC)
I am not much help because Kai came at 39 weeks, but I would try to hold off as much as you can. Just try to relax (easier said than done) and what happens is what happens and that you and DH made the right decision.
Just in case it makes you feel better, there was no sign of Kai coming at all!! I was maybe 1cm at my check up and nothing. Zero. When my water broke, I wasnt even sure. Went to the hospital and went from 2cm to +2cm (head out) in 4 hours. So when it happens there can be no warning. Maybe she will surprise you too
Give her a 'talking to' and tell her mommy wants to meet her and ask her to hurry up. I did with Kai. lol
PS DH and I had sex and that may have sparked Kai's progress. It wasn't comfortable OR pretty that week, but it worked. lol
I would wait.
I didn't have much progress either, I was at 1cm for three weeks in a row. My water broke at exactly 40 weeks and I delivered at 40 weeks, 1 day
It was a pretty fast labor & delivery but I didn't have a clue until my water broke, no indication from my OB appt just a couple days before either.
Good luck Jaime, I'll be thinking about you! I hope she's just holding off so she can be on schedule
I have no advice to give you on the induction question....I think I'd be as torn as you. MY best advice would be to listen to your doctor and go with her recommendations. She's taken good care of you up to this point.
Good luck and hoping that baby decides to come out on her own!!!
i can only share some past comments from preg friends and relatives-in fact our niece was over yesterday with her new born and everyone was saying that she would need to be induced that the baby was huge, etc.etc she delivered naturally and the baby was just under 7 pounds, my sister also was almost 2 weeks past her due date-unless there is some medical emmergency i would try to hold on and let nature take its course-plus dating is still not 100% accurate good luck sending labor dust your way
Hi Jaime,
Is there any indication that she'll be so big she won't fit through your pelvis, or is this just a fear of yours. Nine times out of ten a baby will fit, even if they are big, unless you already know for certain that your pelvis is not capable of birthing a baby of X size.
Why doesn't your doctor want you to go past 41 weeks? Many first time mom's deliver by the end of 42 weeks and 42 weeks is still a consideration for other industrialized nations (like in Europe). They don't get antsy until the mama is at 42 weeks.
Anyway, I am not a fan of induction or augmented labor unless it's absolutely deemed medically neccessary. Only you and your doctor know what your personal risk of waiting to labor naturally vs. induction is.
Have you tried other "methods" of jump starting your labor (walking, sex, pressure points, nipple stimulation, etc.)? If not, I might start there first and see what happens.

Many women go from 0-10 in a matter of hours...so the fact your cervix is softening is encouraging even thoough you're not dialated. In my book, you're not even late yet (since studies show most pregnancies go 41w1d), but I understand that you're ready to get the show on the road. I encourage you to wait it out a bit and give your body and your baby a chance to progress naturally.
Good luck! She'll be here soon enough!
