So I tried the neti pot last night, and I think it helped. I was able to breathe more clearly and it also helped with drainage.
BUT, I am still fumbling a lot with that thing. Sometimes the fluid goes down my throat (I am breathing through my mouth, so must be something about how I'm pouring), gets stuck and doesn't flow out, or it really burns (I am only starting with half a pack of solute, which they said is the minimum). I'm hoping I'll get better with practice, since so many of you swear by it...
Let me know if you have any tips on using the neti. Otherwise, THANKS again for the great suggestion!!
Re: Neti pot!
Oh yay! Yes, practice makes perfect. You can find videos on YouTube that may help you perfect your technique. I find that tilting my head forward and a bit to the side helps keep it from going down my throat.
The burning...you might need less of the sodium powder to start...I had to work up to a full packet. Also, make sure the water is warm enough...too cool and it can cause issues.
Sometimes, if I am really blocked up, it does take a while to get it to flow easily through each side. I plug one side and gently blow, clearing the other side. Do this enough times and eventually, it will start to flow through, if only a trickle at first. I keep doing it until both sides flow freely. Best place for me is in the shower, but I do it at my sink in the evenings. Twice a day, before I brush my teeth. This routine has kept me off major antibiotics and steroids for chronic sinus infections since 2007.

Great advice about doing it in the shower Lori. I'm going to try that.
I've only done it at the kitchen sink. I lean forward and tip my head to the side when I'm pooring in the fluid from the neti pot. Sometimes I'll rest my head on the side of the sink.
I will sometimes get some water down my throat, but I just spit it out.
I'm so glad it worked for you!

Yeah, I think I am just THAT stuffed up! At least on my left side.
Last night I took a Zyrtec and did the neti. Then I fell sleep okay, but I woke up once and couldn't get back to sleep b/c the stuffed nose had returned. I tried the neti again, but still ended up sleeping upright on my couch just so I could breathe right.
I'll keep at it and hopefully things get better because I haven't had a good night's rest in weeks now!
This. I didn't really have the problem of it going down my throat when I leaned forward.
Glad it helped! I'm so glad I discovered it, too! Keep doing it like twice a day for the best results, I think.
