Good Places to Live in Fort Worth or Dallas?

Hi All!

My FI and I are likely to be relocated to Fort Worth from Seattle for FI's job in the next month and will have a weekend (or so) to find our new house! I've never been to Texas before. Any recomendations of good neighborhoods in commuting distance to BNSF? I like to walk a lot, so a neighborhood with parks and a fun neighborhood shopping center would be nice. Also not too far from Dallas would be good in case I find a job there.

Thanks for any advice you might be able to give!

:) Piper

  • What's BNSF?  I suggest you rent first to get a feel for the neighborhoods.
  • I'm not sure what BNSF is, either, but I agree with missywong that it would be better to rent first. My husband and I moved here from Waco (which is actually only about an hour and a half away) and we will have lived her a year in December and we're just now figuring out exactly where we want to live. There are a lot of suburb areas that are super nice and it's really hard to get a feel for the whole city and surrounding areas without living here first.

If you are set on buying something right off, I would suggest calling a realtor. Some around here are Virginia Cook and Williams Trew. They are both online and have websites.

  • Welcome to the area.

Will your finance be at the BNSF headquarters? If so, that's in Fort Worth (Saginaw) and will make it tricky to find a place close to Dallas unless you are both willing to commute. You might want to look in the Grapevine area to start. It's a good mid-way point - but traffic will not be fun for either of you.

I agree with the PPs - rent a place until you find a job and y'all can figure out where you want to be.

  • BNSF is Burlington Northern Railroad which is in Fort Worth. My FI is pretty set on buying, so anyone have any neighborhood recs?

     Thanks!

  • I live in Bedford which is around the Mid-Cities area. I love the location. I work in North Dallas and my husband works in Westlake and our commutes are not bad. Bedford, Colleyville, Grapevine are all great central locations. Keller has some nice new homes.

I know that your husband is set on buying but I would really think about renting first, even if it is just for a few months. I moved here from Philly and it took me a while to figure out where we wanted to live.

We live in Keller and we love it. Lots of new homes in various price ranges and the schools are great.

  • There are some GREAT areas in Fort Worth... but it depends on your price range... feel free to email me with questions. I have grown up in Fort Worth... and love it! My dh and I are trying to sell our house and move back as quick as we can :) meagan.lewis@coldwellbanker.com
  • Thanks for the great suggestions! I really appreciate it!
  • If you're looking for a fun, walkable neighborhood in Fort Worth, I'd recommend looking closer to the city center in the Cultural District.  We have friends who live there and love it - great older homes with a lot of character, and a nice neighborhood with places they can walk to.  However, it looks like that'll be a trek for your FI, as BNSF is north of there in Saginaw.

If you want an easier commute, you'll have to give up your idea of a walkable neighborhood and head to the suburbs.

  • I live in Keller (very near Ft. Worth) and love it.  It is has a small town feel but is definitely close enough to major highways and restaurats/shopping.  Keller does offer a variety of price ranges and the schools are wonderful (from what I hear, we don't have any children to verify that info!).

It would probably be easier to rent first to get a feel for different cities and areas, especially if you only have a short period of time to look.  We bought our home very quickly, and while I don't regret the neighborhood I really do wish we would have seen other parts of Keller because there are tons of great homes here and every time I see something I think "oh, we never thought about there".  Anyway, congrats on moving to the area!!!

  • Keep in mind that renting here is much different than Seatle. Most places have low move in cost and some even offer 6 month leases. There are also a lot of apt complex that are more like town homes. We lived in one prior to buy and it had an attached garge and was very nice. Not sure if that helps but something to keep in mind. Like everyone has said ther are many great areas to look at.
  • I don't know about the Ft. Worth side of town but I disagree with the statement that you can't live in a walkable neighorhood and be in suburbs. We walk to restaurants, the grocery store, school, shopping, everything. It can be found.
  • I don't know much about Ft. Worth, but my good friend lives in an area called Arlington Heights and it's a really cute neighborhood within walking distance to shops and restaurants. Also know, that DFW is very much a "driving" area. We drive everywhere.
