Hi Knotties,
I wanted to changed my last name, but I am not quite sure how to do it. Does anyone know the steps? How many things do I have to change? Does this mean that I would receive a new social security number? Do I have to pay for it? Approximately how long does it take? Any info that you have would be helpful.
Thanks
Re: Changing My Last Name
For the most part it was easy for me, there are a few things I still have in my old name ( I really need to get on that). I did the SS office first, then the DMV, I think I had to have a copy of my marriage certificate for each. At the DMV I did pay $10 to get a new photo ID, if you don't want to pay you can just get the change of info card for free. For the SS office you don't get a new number they just update your info and send a new card to you in the mail.
For bills as I got the monthly statement I just did a name change, some let me do it over the phone and some wanted a marriage certificate faxed.
For my car insurance I even got a married discount when I called in my change!
Hope that helps, good luck.
