Tailgating Food ideas?

What ideas do you have for some great tailgating food?

Bonus points for portability and ease of eating without getting it all over myself.

My friends and I are hosting a couple of tailgates at the local college games. The last one we did pulled pork and brats. But i feel like we need something different for this time.

Re: Tailgating Food ideas?

  • --Taco bar (prepare everything in advance and pack in gladware, etc.  To keep the meat hot, put it one of those insulated totes.  Cold items like cheese, sour cream, tomatos, lettuce, etc. can go in the cooler).

--Baked potato bar (same as above but with baked potatos wrapped in foil and all the fixin's)

--Hot dogs and hamburgers...classics for a reason

--Deli sandwiches (buy or make in advance)

--Chili in bread bowls (make the chili ahead and reheat on a camping stove or keep warm in an insulated container).  Buy small bread rounds and make them into "bowls" before packing them.  Bring along diced onions, shredded cheese, sour cream, etc. packed in a cooler.

  • Beer. That's a food, right? Wink

More seriously, I like hamburgers and stuff like mac&cheese (since it's all in one dish), along with things like hot wings - basic American fare, I guess lol.

  • here's an old post from my blog - link
  • One idea that I love for traveling; picnics, tailgating, etc., is a muffaletta.

Get a large round loaf of bread, pick a little of the insides out to make room for toppings, spread on an olive tapanade and wrap it in wax paper and plastic wrap.  It's easily transportable and it doesn't matter if it gets smashed, that actually makes it better!  All you have to do is unwrap and cut.  These are even better made the night before!

The "official" ingredients that are supposed to be in a muffaletta (New Ahlins style) are:

1 loaf Mufaletta bread (or Italian bread) 1 cup olive mix 1/4 lb sliced ham 1/4 lb sliced mortadella 1/4 lb sliced Genoa salami 1/4 lb sliced provolone 1/4 lb sliced mozzarella

But you could you any deli selections that you like!

Also, what are your teams colors?  We are the Iowa Hawkeyes so we like to make deviled eggs (yellow) and put a little black olive "I" on the top of the yolk!

  • I love those tortilla roll-ups.

They're easy to eat and have the added bonus of having at least some veggie in them and being pretty healthy too (I use low-fat cream cheese in mine). DH loves them too.
